Kylian Mbappe has shared insights into the unique atmosphere within the French national team following Paris Saint-Germain’s recent Champions League success. The Real Madrid forward described how the squad is balancing the emotional contrast between Arsenal defender William Saliba and several PSG players who lifted the trophy.
PSG’s victory influences the French team dynamic
Mbappe opened up about the upbeat mood currently prevailing in the French dressing room after PSG’s Champions League win over Arsenal. The national team captain acknowledged that although the triumph is a proud moment for his former club, it has also brought a challenge for senior players to manage the mixed feelings among teammates from both sides of the final.
“I quickly congratulated my PSG teammates. It’s easier to console one teammate (Saliba) who’s lost the Champions League than five,” Mbappe said during his press conference. “It’s incredible what they’ve accomplished. I know what it feels like to lose a Champions League final, and we’ve all tried to comfort Saliba. The mood in the squad is positive, and our focus is now fully on our target — the World Cup.”
Mbappe’s focus on team success over individual milestones
Even though Mbappe is closing in on becoming one of the all-time leading scorers in World Cup history — with 12 goals across two previous tournaments, just four shy of Germany’s Miroslav Klose — he insists that personal records are not his main motivation. Now leading Real Madrid’s attack, the star forward emphasised that his priority is to maintain France’s dominance on the global stage.
“It’s great to be among the top scorers, though I’m not sure it’s fair since they’re older than me,” he joked. “I’ve been fortunate to take part in two World Cups, go deep into the competition, and perform well. Of course, I want to continue making history. But above all, I want to bring the World Cup back to France.”
Physical readiness and preparation behind the scenes
The French skipper dismissed any doubts about his fitness, affirming that he is in top condition to lead the attack. He also underlined the importance of internal preparation — both tactically and mentally — as France gear up for the challenges of a tournament where the smallest mistakes can be costly.
“I’m in excellent physical condition and delighted to be with the national team. This is a crucial period for us,” Mbappe said. “We’re starting to absorb a lot of internal instructions. Our preparation has been strong, and we know the journey ahead won’t be easy. We’re ready to fight and aim for the final.”
Keeping emotions in check during knockout stages
As one of the favourites heading into the World Cup, Mbappe is taking it upon himself to keep his teammates grounded. He reminded them that in a knockout tournament, even a single poor performance could end their campaign, regardless of the talent within the squad.
“Why should we limit the players’ excitement? The World Cup isn’t a home-and-away series. One bad game and you’re out,” Mbappe stated. “We must control our emotions. I emphasize this message every day. We haven’t accomplished anything yet.”
France will begin their World Cup campaign against Senegal, followed by matches against Iraq and Norway to complete their group stage fixtures.
