Scotland are set to begin their World Cup journey with a match against Haiti, concluding the opening day of action in Group C.

It has been a long wait for the Tartan Army, with their last appearance in a World Cup dating all the way back to 1998.

As they prepare to once again take on familiar opponents such as Brazil and Morocco, many fans might find themselves wondering who last found the net for Scotland on football’s biggest stage.

Of course, Scotland have featured at a World Cup since then – the women’s national team competed at the 2019 edition, where they were placed in a challenging group alongside England, Japan, and Argentina.

Although they were already eliminated before their final group game against Argentina, the Scots looked set to finish on a high after racing to a 3-0 lead. Chelsea star Erin Cuthbert struck the third goal in that match, before Argentina mounted a dramatic comeback to earn a 3-3 draw.

Erin Cuthbert’s strike against Argentina in 2019 remains Scotland’s most recent World Cup goal across both men’s and women’s competitions.

However, if we turn back to the men’s team, we must rewind to 1998 to find their last World Cup goalscorer.

That year, Scotland’s campaign ended with a 3-0 defeat against Morocco. The result ultimately made no difference, as Norway stunned Brazil with a victory that propelled them past Scotland into second place in the group.

Earlier in that same tournament, Scotland had drawn 1-1 with Norway. Havard Flo had put the Norwegians ahead shortly after half-time, but Craig Burley restored parity 20 minutes later. Burley latched onto a long ball from David Weir, sprinted through, and calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Frode Grodas.

That goal, scored by Craig Burley in the 1998 group stage, remains the last time a Scotland men’s player has scored in a World Cup match.

Looking ahead to the 2026 World Cup, Scotland’s men will aim to end that long drought when they face Haiti on Sunday night in the Boston area.

After that opening clash, the Scots will stay in Massachusetts to take on Morocco on Friday, June 19, before concluding the group stage against Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil in Miami Gardens on Wednesday, June 24.
