Australia are set to begin their World Cup 2026 campaign in Group D with a highly anticipated encounter against Turkey.
The Socceroos will aim to start what could be a memorable World Cup for the nation as they face Turkey in their opening group fixture. The Turkish side, however, enter the match in far better form, with both teams looking to make a strong impression early in the tournament.
In their last seven international friendlies, Australia have recorded two wins, one draw, and four losses, conceding nine goals along the way. Turkey, on the other hand, have enjoyed an impressive run, securing six victories and one draw in their previous seven outings, most of which were World Cup qualifiers. They will be eager to maintain that momentum when they face Australia — but who will be in charge of officiating the game?
The Group D match between Australia and Turkey at the World Cup 2026 will be refereed by Venezuelan official Jesus Valenzuela.
Assisting Valenzuela will be his compatriots Jorge Urrego and Tulio Moreno, both serving as assistant referees for this group stage encounter.
The match will take place in Vancouver, with Valenzuela set to oversee proceedings on the pitch. Peru’s Kevin Ortega has been appointed as the fourth official for the fixture, as Turkey look to continue their strong form from the qualifiers into the main tournament.
Valenzuela is a seasoned referee, having officiated in three previous Copa America tournaments. Since his debut in 2013, the 42-year-old has taken charge of nearly 400 matches, beginning his professional career in Venezuela’s top division.
Known for his firm approach to discipline, Valenzuela averages close to five bookings per game. Throughout his career, he has shown approximately 2,000 yellow cards and 115 red cards — one more booking on average per match than the referee who officiated the tournament’s previous game between Scotland and Haiti.
Turkey enter the World Cup in excellent form, and their confidence will be boosted by a recent 2-1 victory over Venezuela in a warm-up match where they came from behind after conceding in the opening 15 minutes.
Valenzuela’s experience and recognition add further credibility to his appointment. He was honoured as CONMEBOL’s best referee in December 2021 by the International Federation of Football History & Statistics (IFFHS), underlining his reputation as one of South America’s top officials.
With Australia eager to make a statement and Turkey looking to carry their fine form into the tournament, all eyes will be on Vancouver as Jesus Valenzuela takes charge of what promises to be a thrilling Group D encounter.
