Brazil began their 2026 World Cup journey with a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Morocco.

A brilliant solo effort from Vinicius Junior salvaged a point for Brazil as they shared the spoils with Morocco in their opening World Cup fixture held in New Jersey.

Ismael Saibari put Morocco in front midway through the first half, delicately lifting the ball over the advancing Alisson from outside the box.

Morocco dominated the early stages but were unable to extend their advantage, and Vinicius Junior’s outstanding equaliser ensured both sides took home a point.

Here is how the Brazil players were rated after the match at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

Alisson 6

The Brazilian goalkeeper rushed out to the edge of his area in an attempt to stop Ismael Saibari, but the Moroccan forward calmly chipped the ball over him to hand the African champions the lead. There was little Alisson could do about it. He later made a vital double save in stoppage time to preserve a draw for Brazil.

Gabriel Magalhaes 5

Was at fault for Morocco’s goal and looked sluggish at times, struggling to keep pace with the opposition. Clearly not at his best as he continued to labour through the game.

Marquinhos 5

Was caught badly out of position for Morocco’s opener. Although he improved as the match went on, that early mistake will certainly haunt him.

Douglas Santos 5

Morocco frequently targeted his flank, launching most of their attacks down his side. Despite that, he managed to hold firm and avoided any major errors.

Roger Ibañez 4

Endured a difficult first half, repeatedly troubled by Bilal El Khannouss. Picked up a yellow card before half-time and was substituted during the break.

Casemiro 4

Appeared off the pace for much of the first half and was overrun by Morocco’s midfielders. His disappointing night ended early as he was taken off at half-time.

Bruno Guimarães 6

Provided the assist for Vinicius Junior’s equaliser and later delivered a dangerous low cross that narrowly evaded Raphinha in the second half. Looked impressive going forward but occasionally left gaps that Morocco exploited.

Lucas Paqueta 5

Lost possession in a risky area, forcing three Brazilian teammates to recover and close down Azzedine Ounahi near the penalty box. Often more vocal than influential, spending more time shouting instructions than impacting the attack.

Vinicius Junior 8

The standout performer for Brazil and undoubtedly the team’s driving force in their quest for a sixth World Cup title. Everything positive seemed to flow through the Real Madrid star. His goal was a masterpiece, as he dazzled several defenders before finishing superbly to level the score for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Raphinha 6

Had flashes of brilliance and worked tirelessly for the team but couldn’t quite find his rhythm in front of goal. A decent performance, though short of his best.

Igor Thiago 4

Missed a golden chance to give Brazil the lead, heading wide from six yards after a fine cross by Vinicius Junior. It was the kind of opportunity he would normally convert with ease in the Premier League. Replaced in the second half after a quiet display.

Substitutes:

Danilo (46’ for Ibañez) 6

Fabinho (46’ for Casemiro) 6

Matheus Cunha (61’ for Paqueta) 6

Luiz Henrique (62’ for Thiago) 6

Danilo (80’ for Guimarães) 6
