Even in 2026, the FIFA World Cup continues to deliver breakout performances from young stars who capture the imagination of football fans around the globe.

For followers of Watford, Nestory Irankunda is already a familiar name. The dynamic winger featured in 35 Championship matches for the club last season after transferring from Bayern Munich during the previous summer window.

However, it was on the world stage that Irankunda truly announced himself. His brilliant strike gave Australia the lead in their Group D encounter against Turkiye, a goal that showcased his remarkable technical ability and composure.

The decisive moment arrived in the 27th minute, somewhat against the flow of play. Up to that point, Turkiye had dominated possession and looked the likelier side to score. Australian coach Tony Popovic’s cautious tactical setup seemed overly conservative—until Irankunda’s counter-attacking brilliance vindicated his approach.

The 20-year-old, born in Tanzania, has been part of the Socceroos setup since he was 18. It was during that same year that Bayern Munich scouts noticed him following a series of outstanding performances for Adelaide United in the A-League.

Irankunda’s game is defined by blistering pace and a low centre of gravity that makes it incredibly tough for defenders to dispossess him. Yet, his goal against Turkiye also demonstrated his refined technique and footballing intelligence.

The move began when Paul Okon-Engstler launched a precise ball over the top of the Turkish backline. Irankunda sprinted onto it, glided past a defender with a clever touch, cut inside into the penalty area, and deceived the goalkeeper with a composed finish into the near bottom corner—a strike that perfectly combined speed, control, and confidence.

Australia’s next World Cup fixture is scheduled for Friday, June 19, when they will face co-hosts the United States in Seattle. The Socceroos will then complete their group stage commitments a week later, meeting Paraguay in San Francisco.

Since 2006, Australia have featured in every edition of the World Cup, twice advancing beyond the group stage to reach the round of 16 under the previous 32-team format. With rising stars like Irankunda stepping up, their hopes of another deep run remain alive and well.
