A coach driver in northern Vietnam has been fined VND13 million (US$493) and had six points deducted from his driver’s license after stopping on an expressway to let passengers use the restroom.

The violation was detected on June 13 by Highway Traffic Police Team No. 3 during a patrol on the Hanoi–Nghe An Expressway.

The coach stopped on a section of road with only two traffic lanes and no emergency lane, forcing several vehicles behind it to take evasive action to avoid a collision.

Although the driver switched on the vehicle’s hazard lights, he failed to place warning signs at least 150 meters behind the coach as required by traffic regulations.

Police later escorted the vehicle to the nearest interchange for further processing.

Traffic authorities warned that unauthorized stopping or parking on expressways poses a serious safety risk, as vehicles traveling at high speeds may not have enough time or distance to avoid a stationary vehicle, particularly in heavy traffic or low-visibility conditions.

The driver was fined 13 million VND for letting a passenger go to the toilet on the highway
