Tezzbuzz Desk- Airplane Mode and Do Not Disturb (DND) Mode present in the smartphone are such features which are used by almost every user. Although many people consider them to be the same, the purpose and work of both are completely different. One feature completely disconnects the phone from the network, while the other provides relief from calls and notifications, but keeps the internet and network active.

If you too are often confused about these two features, then know here the real difference between them and their correct use.

What is Airplane Mode and how does it work?

Airplane Mode was created specifically for use during plane travel. As soon as you turn it on, almost all the wireless connections of the phone stop.

Once this mode is activated:

  • Mobile network shuts down.
  • Calls and SMS stop coming.
  • Mobile data gets disconnected.
  • The phone stops the process of searching for network signals.
  • Battery consumption may be reduced.

However, in many of today’s smartphones, even after Airplane Mode is on, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can be turned on separately if needed.

What is DND Mode?

The job of DND i.e. Do Not Disturb Mode is not to disconnect the phone from the network, but to protect you from unwanted interference.

When DND Mode is on:

  • The call ringtone becomes silent.
  • Notification sounds stop.
  • Messages and app alerts do not bother.
  • Mobile networks and internet continue to function normally.
  • Essential contacts and apps can be allowed.

This is why DND Mode is considered very useful while meeting, studying, office work or sleeping.

The biggest difference between Airplane Mode and DND Mode

Airplane Mode isolates your phone from the external network, while DND Mode just makes the phone silent.

In simple words:

Airplane Mode = Network Off

DND Mode = Disruption Off

That is, no calls, messages or internet will work in Airplane Mode, whereas in DND Mode, internet and all online services will continue to work normally.

When to use Airplane Mode?

Airplane Mode may be a better choice in these circumstances:

  • During air travel.
  • In case of network problem.
  • To save battery.
  • The phone has to be kept completely offline for some time.
  • In areas with weak signal.

Sometimes the network does not work properly, in such a situation, turning Airplane Mode on and off for a few seconds helps the network get connected again quickly.

When to choose DND Mode?

If you want to continue using the internet but don’t want to be bothered by calls and notifications, then DND Mode will be right for you.

This feature is especially useful for:

  • During online meetings.
  • While studying.
  • While working in the office.
  • While watching a movie or video.
  • While sleeping at night.

Which feature is more beneficial?

Both the features are useful according to their respective purposes. If you want to completely disconnect the phone from the network, then choose Airplane Mode. On the other hand, if you just want to work peacefully and keep the internet running, then DND Mode will be better.

Airplane Mode and DND Mode may look similar, but the work of both is different. Airplane Mode disconnects the phone from the network, while DND Mode controls interruptions from calls and notifications. Using the right features at the right time not only improves your smartphone experience but also helps in increasing both battery and productivity.
