'Take shelter' – Tornado alert disrupts England’s World Cup preparations in Kansas City

England’s build-up to the World Cup faced an unexpected setback when Thomas Tuchel’s squad received an emergency tornado warning. The Three Lions had to cancel their evening plans and remain inside their hotel as severe weather swept through Kansas City.

Emergency alerts disrupt England camp

Thomas Tuchel and his England team were given a startling introduction to life in the American Midwest on Saturday evening. Only a few hours after arriving in Kansas City from their training base in Florida, the squad was instructed to stay indoors when local authorities issued high-level emergency alerts across the area.

Earlier in the day, the team had completed a community training session at the Swope Soccer Village under intense heat. However, conditions changed rapidly as a major storm front approached. According to reports from The Athletic, players received automatic notifications on their phones just after 8 pm local time from the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS), warning of a ‘Severe Thunderstorm Warning’ and advising them to “take shelter in a sturdy building, away from windows,” amid fears of winds reaching up to 80 mph.

Weather report interrupts football broadcast

The situation escalated around 8:30 pm when the NWS raised the threat level. A "Tornado Watch" was issued for Johnson County, Kansas, where the England squad’s hotel is situated. Simultaneously, a "Tornado Warning" was declared for Jackson County, Missouri, the location of the team’s training ground, where they had trained for the first time earlier that afternoon.

While England’s delegation stayed secure inside their hotel, the storm’s effects were felt across the region. Reports later confirmed that a tornado did touch down in Missouri, though it remained outside the immediate vicinity of Kansas City. Many players and staff members had been watching the Scotland vs Haiti match when Fox’s broadcast was repeatedly interrupted and eventually replaced by live emergency weather updates.

Three Lions’ schedule remains unchanged

Strong winds and heavy rain lashed Kansas City on Saturday night, causing power outages in several areas. Despite the disruption, England’s training schedule is expected to proceed as planned, with the team set to return to the Swope Soccer Village on Sunday morning for their final preparations in Kansas City. After that, they will shift their focus to Dallas, where they are scheduled to face Croatia on June 17 in their opening Group L encounter.

Storm warning for two matches

This incident underscores growing concerns among tournament organisers about the North American summer weather. Extreme conditions have become a recurring issue for major football tournaments in the region; last year’s Club World Cup saw several matches postponed or delayed due to lightning and severe storms. The current World Cup faces similar challenges, with storm warnings already issued for two of Sunday’s fixtures: Sweden vs Tunisia in Monterrey, Mexico, and Ivory Coast vs Ecuador in Philadelphia.
