Ivory Coast’s match-winner in their opening game of the 2026 World Cup, Amad Diallo, has emphasised the importance of maintaining the team’s ambition and focus throughout the tournament.
Diallo scored the decisive goal that secured Ivory Coast’s 1-0 victory over Ecuador in their Group E opener on Monday (15 June 2026) at Lincoln Financial Field.
The impressive performance from the West African side in their first match has boosted their chances of progressing to the knockout stages.
Holding the status of a dark horse does not bother the team from West Africa in the slightest.
“For a team capable of springing surprises, I would favour Ivory Coast over Ecuador in this group,” said football enthusiast Bayu Ajianto during the Super Taktik podcast at the Tribunnews Solo office in Karanganyar, Central Java.
“Ivory Coast possess the quality, character, and momentum that could upset many predictions,” he added.
Diallo, however, urged his teammates not to become complacent after this result.
He reminded that their journey in the group stage is still long.
They still have to face Germany and Curaçao to secure additional points.

“We clearly needed a result like this (a win),” Diallo said after the match, as quoted by DAZN.
“We know we came here to make history. This is the first World Cup for some of us, and we are highly motivated,” he explained.
Amad Diallo is among the group of players making their World Cup debut this year.
He did not start the match but came on as a substitute in the 56th minute to inject fresh energy into the team’s play.
The Manchester United player revealed that Ivory Coast’s preparations had been thorough even before the tournament kicked off, including in their pre-World Cup friendlies.
They faced France, one of the strongest teams in world football, and managed to defeat them 2-1.
Once again, Amad Diallo was the hero in that match, scoring the winning goal for Ivory Coast.
He stressed to his teammates the need to maintain a strong mentality throughout the group stage.
Securing victories, he said, would be the key to advancing to the next round.
“Since that match against France, we knew this was our moment,” Diallo stated.
“We are mentally ready and happy with this win. But we don’t want to stop here.”
“In the next match, we must start with the same mentality and aim for another victory,” he added.
With this result, Ivory Coast temporarily sit second in Group E of the 2026 World Cup standings.
They are just behind Germany, who top the table after a dominant 7-1 win over Curaçao.
Ecuador are currently third, while Curaçao remain at the bottom of the group.
