Hundreds of residents in Pontianak gathered to watch the opening match between Mexico and South Africa, which Mexico won 2-0. The public viewing took place at the TVRI West Kalimantan courtyard on Jalan Ahmad Yani, Pontianak City, early on Friday, 12 June 2026.
One of the attendees, Ria, shared that she thoroughly enjoyed the lively atmosphere of watching the game together, saying it was far more exciting than watching alone at home.
"It’s really fun because it’s crowded. The atmosphere feels cool and comfortable. Watching at home is quiet and dull, but here you meet lots of people and enjoy a different vibe," she said.
The Pontianak resident mentioned that she came to the viewing event at the invitation of her friends.
Besides enjoying the match, she felt that such events also serve as a chance to expand social circles and gain new experiences.
"My friends invited me. Apart from watching the game, I hope to learn new things and meet new people since it’s lively and full of energy here," she added.
Ria attended the viewing party with her classmates from the Business Administration Department of Politeknik Negeri Pontianak (Polnep), where she is currently studying.
Meanwhile, Acting Head of TVRI West Kalimantan Station, Sugeng Widiyanto, explained that the public viewing of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was organized because TVRI holds the official broadcasting rights for the tournament in Indonesia.
According to Sugeng, the public viewing not only provides entertainment for the community but also aims to inspire greater passion for football and foster sports development in the region, particularly in West Kalimantan.
He added that the World Cup serves as a powerful motivator for football enthusiasts in West Kalimantan to nurture their interests and strive for excellence.
"Through this public viewing, we hope to motivate and encourage the community, especially football fans in West Kalimantan, to continue advancing and achieving more in sports," Sugeng concluded.
