Uruguay are being touted as a potential dark horse in this year’s World Cup, and their clash against Saudi Arabia on Monday night offers a strong opportunity to make a statement.

The South American side find themselves in a relatively uneven Group H at the 2026 World Cup, featuring tournament heavyweights Spain alongside Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, who are not expected to pose significant challenges.

As the two teams prepare to meet at Miami Stadium, all eyes will be on Uruguay’s stars and how they approach this fixture against a lower-ranked opponent.

Uruguay may no longer have legendary forwards Luis Suárez and Edinson Cavani leading the line, but their squad still boasts plenty of quality and international experience. Federico Valverde, who impressed with a goal against England earlier this year, will be central to their playmaking duties.

In front of him, Darwin Núñez will spearhead the attack. Despite facing criticism for inconsistency at Liverpool, Núñez remains a potent threat in international football and will look to find the back of the net.

The Uruguay midfield—anchored by Valverde, Manuel Ugarte, and Tottenham Hotspur’s Rodrigo Bentancur—will likely dictate the tempo and control possession, giving them a strong chance to dominate proceedings against Saudi Arabia.

Defensively, Uruguay remain solid with Ronald Araújo and José María Giménez marshalling the backline, supported by veteran goalkeeper Fernando Muslera. This core of experience and stability makes the South Americans one of the more complete sides in the competition.

Saudi Arabia, ranked 60th in the world, face an uphill battle. Their manager only took charge in April, and the squad lacks the depth and technical ability of their Group H rivals. While they may show determination, the gulf in class is evident.

It would take an extraordinary performance for Saudi Arabia to secure even a point from this encounter. Anything other than a comfortable Uruguay win would come as a major surprise.
