PALANGKA RAYA – A surprising result unfolded in Group H of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Pre-tournament favourites Spain were held to a goalless draw by Cape Verde, who made their debut appearance in the global football tournament.

The match took place on Monday, June 15, 2026, at 11:00 PM local time (WIB).

The intensity of the contest created a tense atmosphere at the public viewing event held in the courtyard of TVRI Central Kalimantan.

At times, the tension turned into bursts of excitement whenever Spain created a golden opportunity on goal.

The same energy erupted in the opposite direction when Cape Verde threatened with quick counterattacks.

Although Spain failed to secure a full three points in their opening game, local supporter Firdaus (19) from Palangka Raya remained confident that Lamine Yamal and his teammates would progress far in the tournament – perhaps even claiming the title.

He compared Spain’s situation to Argentina’s 2022 campaign, when Lionel Messi’s side lost their first match to Saudi Arabia but went on to lift the trophy.

According to Firdaus, Luis de la Fuente’s men still showed a satisfactory performance despite not finding the back of the net.

“If we remember, Argentina lost to Saudi Arabia in their opening game in 2022. Maybe Spain can do the same and come back stronger,” he said after watching the match at the TVRI Central Kalimantan grounds on Tuesday, June 16, 2026.

Firdaus observed that Spain played aggressively from the start, maintaining pressure throughout the match.

He noted, however, that Cape Verde’s national team adopted a disciplined defensive strategy that effectively neutralised Spain’s attacks.

Despite the draw, Firdaus expressed optimism that Spain would secure better results in their upcoming fixtures.

“If their next opponents play more openly, Spain should be able to capitalise,” he added.

A loyal supporter of Spain and FC Barcelona since 2014, Firdaus remains confident that La Furia Roja can go deep into this year’s competition.

He also praised Spain’s current squad, describing it as star-studded across all positions, with his favourite player being midfielder Pedri Gonzalez.

Spain and Cape Verde are part of Group H alongside Uruguay and Saudi Arabia.

This draw temporarily placed Spain and Cape Verde at the top of the standings, as the Uruguay vs Saudi Arabia match was scheduled for the following morning.
