With Marc Cucurella having completed his transfer to Real Madrid, Chelsea are now on the lookout for a new left-back to fit into Xabi Alonso’s revamped setup.
The Blues face a busy transfer window this summer following a disappointing 2025/26 campaign that fell short of expectations.
With Xabi Alonso taking charge as the new manager, a significant reshuffle within the Chelsea squad was always anticipated.
Now that Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid has been finalised, Chelsea are prioritising the search for a suitable replacement, and their leading target is a familiar face to the club.
The London side had initially been considering a move for Nathaniel Brown, but the German defender is set to join Bayern Munich instead. This has shifted Chelsea’s attention squarely towards former academy graduate Lewis Hall.
As reported by TEAMtalk, the Newcastle United full-back could make a return to West London in a deal worth around £60 million.
Hall became one of Newcastle United’s record signings when he moved from Chelsea in 2024 for approximately £35 million, following an impressive loan spell at St. James’ Park.
However, with the Magpies facing pressure to balance their books in compliance with SCR regulations, they might be compelled to sell Hall for a considerable profit.
This development will come as a setback for Michael Carrick and Manchester United, who also have Hall on their summer wishlist. Regardless, reports suggest that Hall and his representatives are open to a transfer ahead of the new season.
Surprisingly, Hall did not make the cut for England’s 2026 World Cup squad, leaving him ample time during the off-season to evaluate his future options.
Nevertheless, Chelsea are exploring additional options. Alonso is reportedly eager to reunite with Bayer Leverkusen’s Alex Grimaldo, who, despite being 30 years old, is well-versed in the Spaniard’s tactical approach.
Juventus wing-back Andrea Cambiaso is another player admired by Chelsea’s recruitment team, particularly for his versatility to operate effectively on either flank.
According to FourFourTwo, if Newcastle decide to part ways with Hall for a fee close to the €40 million valuation listed on Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old would represent a smart acquisition for any top Premier League side.
The final outcome may depend on how urgently Newcastle — having already secured £70 million from Anthony Gordon’s sale this summer — need to generate further funds.
