‘They hardly cross midfield’ – Rodri criticises Cape Verde’s defensive tactics after Spain’s goalless World Cup opener

Spain began their 2026 World Cup campaign on a disappointing note as they were held to a 0-0 draw by debutants Cape Verde. Despite fielding a team filled with world-class talent, the reigning European champions were unable to overcome the African side’s disciplined defensive structure.

Rodri fumes over Cape Verde’s defensive strategy

Spanish captain Rodri did not mince words when assessing Cape Verde’s approach after his team’s frustrating Group H opener. The Manchester City midfielder suggested that their opponents displayed minimal attacking intent, preferring instead to sit deep and defend for most of the encounter.

Speaking to La 1 after the final whistle, Rodri voiced his irritation at the tactics employed by the World Cup newcomers. “It wasn’t meant to be. There’s little to complain about,” he said. “We knew it was a game that required patience. They sat back and dropped very quickly. We couldn’t put the ball in. We created chances but couldn’t finish them. The positive thing is that they barely created anything against us. We need to work on our finishing.”

When asked specifically about Cape Verde’s style of play, Rodri added: “That’s how they play. They don’t get past midfield. It’s a matter of improving our finishing.”

Frustrating night for La Roja in Atlanta

Luis de la Fuente’s men dominated possession at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium but lacked the decisive touch to find the net. Ferran Torres came closest when his strike rattled the crossbar, while several other chances went begging as Spain’s usually sharp attack struggled against the world’s 65th-ranked team.

Even the late introduction of Barcelona prodigy Lamine Yamal with 20 minutes left couldn’t ignite the breakthrough Spain needed. The result leaves the Euro 2024 champions with plenty to improve upon in their remaining group games if they hope to secure a smooth path to the knockout rounds of the expanded tournament.

Vozinha shines as Cape Verde’s hero

While Rodri’s side departed frustrated, the atmosphere in Cape Verde’s camp was euphoric. Representing a nation of just 525,000 people, the debutants celebrated the draw as though it were a victory. Leading their heroic effort was 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who delivered several crucial saves to deny Spain and secure a historic point.

Vozinha, earning his 90th international cap in the stalemate, was visibly emotional after the match. Having been named Player of the Match, the veteran goalkeeper said: “It was a great match. We worked incredibly hard for this moment and this dream. We are very proud. We knew it wasn’t going to be easy.”

Cape Verde prove they belong

The result stands as a major statement for African football and Cape Verde in particular, who were tipped by many to struggle in Group H. Their organised and disciplined performance demonstrated that they fully deserve their place on the world stage, regardless of the Spanish criticism.

Vozinha reaffirmed his team’s determination, stating: “We came to the World Cup to compete. I know there are people who think we are a small and weak team, but we are here to compete and give everything we have.”
