Luka Modric has delivered a bold statement ahead of Croatia’s crucial World Cup opener against England, declaring that his side has nothing to fear. The AC Milan midfielder, now competing in his fifth World Cup, continues to be the driving force for a nation determined to match their impressive runs in 2018 and 2022. Despite ongoing discussions surrounding his club future and possible retirement, the veteran star remains entirely focused on performing for his country.

All eyes on the World Cup

Although Modric is yet to consider retirement, he remains tight-lipped about where he will play next season. The 40-year-old AC Milan playmaker is entering his fifth World Cup and has made it clear that career milestones and contract matters are secondary to pursuing international success.

The Croatia captain’s current Milan contract expires this summer, though he has the option to extend it for another year. While speculation about his retirement continues, no official decision has been made.

Refusing to be drawn into future plans, Modric told reporters, “I am focused solely on this tournament because my goal is to help the team in the best way possible.”

With just two appearances shy of reaching 200 international caps, the Croatian skipper insists that this journey to North America is not a farewell tour or a “Last Dance” with the national team.

Confidence before England clash

Croatia will face a tough challenge in their opening group match against England, a team Modric acknowledges as the strongest in their group. However, the experienced midfielder quickly dismissed any notion that Croatia would be daunted by the Three Lions’ star power or their status as favourites.

Embracing the challenge, Modric said, “We respect everyone, but we’re not afraid of anyone. It’s up to us to show it on the pitch. We want to make every Croatian proud.” He added that while England may be tipped to win, Croatia’s depth of experience and unity could give them the edge once again.

Not here just to participate

After finishing as runners-up in 2018 and claiming third place in 2022, Croatia arrives at this tournament with a reputation for exceeding expectations. Modric insists that the team has not travelled to the United States merely to make up the numbers, but to challenge seriously for the title that has narrowly escaped them in the past.

“The biggest strength of Croatia at recent World Cups has always been our unity, and it must remain that way now. We’re not here just to participate or play a supporting role. When we’re united, we can compete with anyone,” Modric affirmed.

Leading the next generation

As Croatia undergoes a natural transition, Modric sees his responsibility extending beyond his playmaking duties. He views himself as the link between the golden generation and the emerging talents. He aims to ensure that younger players have the freedom to shine while receiving the guidance and support of seasoned teammates.

“We experienced players must help the younger ones, guide them, and pass on our experience, quality, and character. The young players should feel free to express their abilities, and it’s our duty to support them. A generational shift is happening, but our goal remains the same — to keep winning and performing well, just as we did in the last two World Cups,” Modric concluded.
