Nationalist Citizens Party of India i.e. NCPI has become the new home of 20 rebel MPs of TMC. Before this rebellion, perhaps someone knew about this unknown party NCPI. But ever since these rebels have merged with NCPI, it has started being discussed a lot. This party, which is contesting elections in some selected assembly constituencies of the North-East, is today on the verge of becoming the fifth largest party in the country. Perhaps even he had not imagined that NCPI, which was registered three years ago, would come into the limelight like this.
You can gauge the status of this party from the fact that it has only Rs 75 in its account. But currently it has TMC worth crores of rupees in its hands. Out of its 28 MPs, 20 came to it. After the news of merger, NCPI one day created a social media page and announced that it is now the largest faction in the Parliament from Bengal. The party welcomed the MPs in many posts.
In fact, Sheuli Kundu, who was the president of this party, has recently resigned from her post. Three years ago her husband Uttiya Kundu had established NCPI. He resigned from the post of president on 28 May 2026 after the merger of rebel TMC MPs. Sheuli Kundu practices law in Calcutta High Court. Recently while talking to journalists he said that he has left NCPI.
NCPI contested its first elections in Tripura in the year 2023, but had to face a crushing defeat. This party was registered with the Election Commission on 20 January 2023, but people did not know much about it. Its headquarters is in Howrah, West Bengal. Despite being a party of Bengal, it contested its first election in Tripura.
The party had fielded 7 candidates in the 2023 assembly elections, but the Election Commission canceled the nominations of four of its candidates as per the rules. Only three candidates could contest the elections. Including these three, the entire party got only 822 votes.
In the financial year 2022-23, the income and expenditure of this party remained almost equal. At the end of the year he was left with only Rs 75. The party received Rs 1,13,075 as donation. The party spent almost all the money. Out of this, Rs 49,400 was spent only in Tripura elections.
There are many prominent faces of TMC in the rebel group. These include Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, Shatabdi Roy, Rachna Banerjee, Sayani Ghosh, Yusuf Pathan, Mala Roy, June Maliya, Sudip Bandyopadhyay and others. The rebel group claims that 20 TMC MPs have supported this move (merger). Recently, rebel MPs left their parent party TMC and merged their faction with NCPI.
Now the further decision has to be taken by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. The rebel MPs demand that they should be recognized as a separate faction in the House and separate seating arrangements should be made. At the same time, Trinamool Congress has appealed to the Speaker not to recognize this new group. The Speaker's decision will decide whether NCPI will remain just an unknown party or will become the biggest ally of BJP.
If NCPI gets recognition, it will become the fifth largest party in the country with 20 Lok Sabha MPs.
