Vozinha, the 40-year-old goalkeeper from Cape Verde, has become the talk of the football world following his heroic performance at the FIFA World Cup 2026 during Cape Verde’s match against Spain.

The veteran shot-stopper was the standout performer for his team as he helped Cape Verde hold Spain to a surprising draw in their opening Group H fixture of the tournament.

The match, played at the Atlanta Stadium on Tuesday (June 16, 2026), saw Vozinha deliver an exceptional display, producing seven crucial saves that kept the European giants at bay.

Thanks to his outstanding performance, the Spanish players grew increasingly frustrated and were forced to settle for a result that many considered an embarrassing setback.

Playing for the Portuguese second-division club Chavez, Vozinha was deservedly named the man of the match at the end of the encounter.

Following the game, his social media following, particularly on Instagram, surged dramatically as fans around the world praised his heroics.

Yet behind the celebrations, Vozinha revealed an emotional side that brought him to tears after the final whistle.

He spoke about the immense effort that the Cape Verde team had put in to reach the final stage of the FIFA World Cup 2026.

“We worked extremely hard to reach this moment, to make this dream come true. This is the result of the entire team’s effort,” Vozinha said.

“We knew it wouldn’t be easy because Spain are one of the strongest teams in the world. We are very happy with this result.”

At 40, Vozinha said he had waited his entire life for the chance to play on football’s biggest stage.

“I have dreamed of this moment all my life. I have worked hard all my life to be here,” he continued.

“Today I was able to contribute to the team with my experience, and that makes me very happy,” he added.

During his post-match interview, Vozinha broke down in tears as he shared that his family could not attend the match.

He revealed that he was raised by his grandparents, who had passed away several years earlier and thus never got the chance to see him play at the World Cup.

Meanwhile, visa issues and financial constraints prevented his mother from traveling to the stadium, turning the mood emotional.

“I cried after the match because I was raised by my grandparents when I was little. They couldn’t be here,” Vozinha said tearfully.

“They passed away a few years ago. My mother also couldn’t come because of visa issues and the costs involved.”

“We couldn’t get everything sorted in time,” he concluded.

Despite the emotional moment, Vozinha’s resilience between the posts will soon be tested again when Cape Verde face another football powerhouse, Uruguay, in their next fixture scheduled for June 22.
