Getting to Know Vozinha

Born in Mindelo on 3 June 1986, Vozinha is one of the oldest players to make his debut for his national team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

His football journey was far from easy.

As a child, he was often underestimated because of his small frame, which many thought unsuitable for a goalkeeper.

However, his physical development changed the course of his life and opened the door to a professional football career.

Vozinha began his professional career in his mid-20s, joining Angolan club Progresso.

He made his international debut for the Cape Verde national team in 2012.

Since then, he has become a cornerstone of the squad and one of the few players to feature in major tournaments such as the African Cup of Nations.

Throughout his career, he has played in several countries, including Cyprus, Slovakia, Moldova, and Portugal.

Currently, he is reported to be playing for the Portuguese second-division club Chaves as their goalkeeper.

At club level, Vozinha made 19 appearances for Chaves in the 2025/2026 Portuguese league season.

During that campaign, he recorded a clean sheet across 1,710 minutes of play.

Cape Verde’s draw against Spain came as one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 World Cup.

Thanks to Vozinha’s extraordinary performance in goal, Cape Verde proved that even smaller football nations can compete with the giants.

According to FOX Sports, several players and commentators expressed admiration for Vozinha’s ability to maintain top concentration levels throughout the match on Tuesday (16 June 2026).

On the other hand, Vozinha stated that he would continue to work on improving his skills to make the most of moments like this.

“I am now 40 years old, but I only became a professional player at 25. This is a reward for the entire journey,” Vozinha remarked in an interview with FIFA, as quoted by The Athletic (15 June 2026).
