Before the NEET UG 2026 Re-Exam, the Central Government, taking a big decision, has temporarily blocked the instant messaging platform Telegram in India till June 22 because the examination is to be held on June 21. The Government of India has taken this step after the recommendation of NTA (National Examination Agency). Actually, in this case NTA said that some people used Telegram to provide fake question papers to the students. The message edit feature of this app has also been temporarily closed, this feature will remain closed till June 30. NTA says that using this feature, fake question papers were added by editing old messages. In such a situation, it becomes important to know how Telegram is being used for illegal activities, which also includes cases like film piracy and paper leaks. Let us understand.

Telegram Users in India: How many users of Telegram in India?

This instant messaging app, which is rapidly flourishing in India, has a strong user base. According to the report of Resourcera, Telegram has 104.04 million (about 10 crore 40 lakh) active users in India, due to which India is at the forefront of Telegram MAU (Monthly Active Users) in the world. More than 100 crore Android users have downloaded this app through Google Play Store. On the other hand, this app is at 5th position among social networking apps on Apple Store.

What is happening on Telegram App?

Telegram is used in India for many things like chatting and file sharing etc. But there are some works which are legally illegal but those works are going on indiscriminately on this platform, in such a situation it would not be wrong to say that illegal works are being done right under the nose of the company on its own platform and the company is not taking any action on it. For example, if someone wants a movie, where can I get it on Telegram, why? Because there are many such groups on this app who share the entire movies on the platform through links as soon as the movies and web series are released, due to which this app has gradually become such a 'haven' where movies are available openly and that too for free.

One reason for this is that files up to 2GB can be easily shared on Telegram, which eliminates the problem of sending videos and large files. But there is no one to control it, here the question arises that why is the company not doing anything? There is a need to take strict steps to stop such work.

How did 'Leak' become a platform?

Every illegal work which is not being done on any other app is being done indiscriminately through Telegram. It is not just a matter of free movie download here. Illegal activities like paper leak (NEET UG 2026 paper leak) are also happening on this app due to which this app is emerging as a main center for wrongdoers.

Freedom to hide your identity on the app: Those creating channels or groups on this app can hide their phone numbers because they do not need to show their real numbers for this purpose. Not only phone numbers but people also use fake usernames for illegal work due to which their identity remains hidden.

The app became a stronghold also because of reach: In this app, you can connect with millions of people by creating a Telegram channel once, because any number of subscribers can join the Telegram channel. There is no limit to it, that is why if anything is shared through the channel, the content spreads like wildfire to millions of people.
