The live broadcast of the Iraq vs Norway match on TVRI marks Erling Haaland’s debut at the FIFA World Cup 2026. Football fans in Palangka Raya, Central Kalimantan, are eagerly waiting for this thrilling encounter in the Local Celebration 2026 series.
The match between Iraq and Norway will take place at Gillette Stadium at 05:00 WIB on Wednesday (June 17, 2026). Here’s a comprehensive analysis for football enthusiasts in Palangka Raya.
After a dominant qualification campaign, Norway returns to the World Cup stage for the first time in the 21st century, facing Iraq — a team that secured their place through the play-offs — at the Gillette Stadium.
Their relatively smooth journey to North America this summer has made Norway one of the dark horses among analysts, and this opener will give them a chance to showcase their potential against a comparatively weaker opponent.
Iraq, the last team to qualify for the World Cup, makes a long-awaited return to the global stage since their debut in 1986. Managed by Graham Arnold — who guided Australia to the Round of 16 in Qatar three and a half years ago — Iraq faces an uphill battle to make an impact this summer.
The experienced manager will need something close to a miracle if Iraq hopes for an extended run in the tournament. They find themselves in the ‘Group of Death’ alongside France and Senegal, with their next match set against Les Bleus.
Both teams are brimming with enthusiasm after long absences, but Iraq could struggle against the Scandinavian power in the home ground of the New England Patriots.
While Norway needed only eight matches and eight victories to qualify for their first World Cup since 1998, Iraq had to endure a grueling 21-match campaign. Under Arnold, the Lions of Mesopotamia overcame Bolivia in the inter-confederation play-off to book their spot.
In 1986, Iraq lost all three of their group matches — their only World Cup appearance — and Arnold would consider any improvement on that record a major success given the tough group opponents this time.
Survival will likely be Iraq’s main goal in North America. Meanwhile, Norway, facing an AFC representative for the first time at a World Cup, will aim to confirm their credentials before tougher challenges ahead.
For football fans in Palangka Raya, here’s a look at Haaland’s record with Norway:
The Norwegian superstar once again clinched the Premier League Golden Boot in the 2025–26 season. As expected, his record for the national team is phenomenal — 55 goals in 50 appearances, making him the top scorer across Europe in qualifiers with 16 goals.
Norway’s recent form:
Under Ståle Solbakken, Norway has lost only once since early 2025 (a 2–1 defeat to the Netherlands in March). Their 3–1 win over Sweden and 1–1 draw with Morocco in pre-tournament friendlies highlighted their strength and consistency.
Iraq’s record against non-AFC teams:
Iraq rarely faces teams outside the AFC, and when they do, results have been mixed. Since 2022, the Lions of Mesopotamia have played eight matches against non-AFC sides, winning two and losing four.
Prediction: Iraq 0–3 Norway

According to him, the world’s biggest football tournament is a moment eagerly anticipated by the public to enjoy top-level matches featuring the best players from around the globe.
“We should be delighted. This year, God willing, we can once again follow the World Cup matches. It’s a great opportunity for all of us to watch together. I myself am a football fan,” said Zaini after attending a joint ceremony commemorating Pancasila Day at the Palangka Raya City Hall on Monday (June 1, 2026).
He expressed hope that the excitement of the 2026 World Cup would also be felt by the people of Palangka Raya, through community gatherings such as public viewing events.
“Hopefully, we can watch together. We expect some public screenings here in our city. I’ll also bring this up with the Mayor,” he added.
As for his favourite players, Zaini admitted he still admires the senior stars who have long been icons of world football. Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi remain his top choices when it comes to international football.
“Yes, my favourite players are still the senior ones — Messi and Ronaldo,” he said with a smile.
Nevertheless, he hopes the 2026 World Cup will not only feature established stars but also unveil fresh talents ready to shine on the global stage.
He noted that one of the World Cup’s greatest appeals is the emergence of young players who perform impressively and eventually become world-class footballers.
“There are always many great players. Hopefully, this World Cup will bring out new world-class talents. Usually, it’s in tournaments like this that future stars are revealed,” he remarked.
Zaini emphasized the importance of generational renewal in football to ensure the sport remains exciting for fans worldwide. He believes it is time for a new generation to step up and continue the legacy of the senior international stars.
