The opening match of Group J at the 2026 FIFA World Cup between Argentina and Algeria is set to take place at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City on Wednesday (17 June 2026) at 08:00 WIB. The encounter is expected to be filled with high intensity and drama.

Arriving in North America with a star-studded squad led by Lionel Messi, the reigning champions Argentina carry a proud reputation as the defending titleholders from the previous edition.

The Albiceleste’s journey to the 2026 World Cup finals was impressive, as they dominated the CONMEBOL qualification stage.

Argentina topped the South American qualifiers with a total of 38 points, collected from 12 victories, 2 draws, and 4 defeats.

On the other hand, Algeria also boasts a strong record heading into the tournament.

Under coach Vladimir Petkovic, the Desert Foxes secured their World Cup berth by finishing as the winners of Group G in the CAF qualifying zone.

The North African side demonstrated remarkable consistency, suffering just one loss in ten qualifying fixtures.

Both teams enter this clash with positive momentum, having recorded consecutive wins in their two most recent friendly matches.

Algeria defeated strong opponents such as the Netherlands and Bolivia, while Argentina overcame Honduras and Iceland.

This fixture is particularly significant for Lionel Messi, as it marks his 200th appearance for the Argentina senior national team.

Messi currently holds the record as Argentina’s all-time top scorer with an astounding 117 goals from 199 appearances.

The man known as "La Pulga" has also netted 13 goals across his five World Cup campaigns.

He now needs only four more goals to surpass Germany’s Miroslav Klose as the highest goal scorer in World Cup history.

“It’s not only Argentinians, but everyone on the planet wants to see him play,” said Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni during a pre-match press conference on Tuesday (16 June), as quoted by the Associated Press.

“Everyone wants to see him on the pitch. Messi has the power to captivate fans all over the world, not just in Argentina.”
