UPSC Prelims 2026 Result: The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the results of the Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 on its official website. Candidates who have cleared the prelims have now begun preparing for the Main Examination (Mains), which is scheduled to commence in August. The UPSC Civil Services Examination is considered one of the toughest in the country due to the limited number of vacancies and the vast number of aspirants—numbering in the hundreds of thousands. This year, the Commission announced recruitment for a total of 1,016 posts, while approximately 5 lakh candidates appeared for the exam. Based on these figures, there were, on average, about 589 candidates vying for a single post. This is why even a margin of one or two marks can make a significant difference between a candidate's selection and failure.

How many candidates cleared the prelims?
According to the results released by the UPSC, a total of 13,343 candidates have cleared the Civil Services Preliminary Examination and qualified for the Main Examination. A notification was issued for a total of 1,016 posts; consequently, there are now approximately 13 contenders for each vacancy. In the previous year, 14,161 candidates were selected for the Main Examination against 1,087 vacancies. While the number of selected candidates is slightly lower this time—reflecting the reduced number of vacancies compared to the previous year—the Commission has clarified that the candidature of all selected aspirants remains provisional. Only those candidates who fulfill all the eligibility criteria prescribed by the UPSC will be able to proceed to the next stage.

Exam held on May 24
The UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2026 was conducted on May 24, 2026, at various centers across the country. Candidates had been awaiting the results since the exam concluded, and that wait is now over. The Commission released the results on June 15, 2026, marking the beginning of the next phase for the successful candidates.

What must candidates do now?
Clearing the prelims does not equate to final success. Candidates must now complete certain necessary formalities to appear for the Main Examination. UPSC has announced that candidates are required to complete an online process via the Commission's portal between June 19 and June 28, 2026. During this period, candidates must fill out the Main Examination application form, pay an examination fee of ₹200, and confirm or update their personal details. They must also provide information regarding the need for a scribe, assistive devices, or large-print question papers, if applicable, and indicate their cadre preferences before making the final submission of the application. However, SC, ST, Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (PwBD), and female candidates are exempted from the examination fee. UPSC has clearly stated that candidates who fail to complete this process within the stipulated timeframe will not be issued an e-admit card for the Main Examination.

**UPSC CSE 2026 Full Schedule**

According to the schedule released by UPSC:
Prelims Examination: May 24, 2026
Prelims Result: June 15, 2026
Mains Application Process Begins: June 19, 2026
Last Date for Mains Application: June 28, 2026
Civil Services Main Examination Begins: August 21, 2026
This means candidates have approximately two months to prepare for the Main Examination.

**What does the Mains Examination entail?**

The Civil Services Main Examination is the second and most crucial stage of the selection process. Unlike the Prelims, which is objective in nature, the Mains is a descriptive examination. It comprises a total of nine papers, including those on the Essay, General Studies, Optional Subjects, and languages. This examination evaluates a candidate's analytical ability, writing skills, comprehension, and administrative perspective. Interview After the Mains
Candidates who succeed in the Main Examination will be called for the final stage of the UPSC process: the personality test, or interview. The interview assesses a candidate's personality, decision-making ability, leadership qualities, administrative acumen, and perspective on contemporary issues. Subsequently, a final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained in both the Main Examination and the interview. Candidates are allocated to various services—including IAS, IPS, IFS, and IRS—based on this merit list.

When Will the Cut-off and Answer Key Be Released?
Following the declaration of the Preliminary results, candidates are now awaiting the cut-off marks and the answer key. However, in keeping with UPSC's established practice, this information will not be released immediately. The Commission has clarified that the Preliminary cut-off, individual candidate scores, and the answer key will only be made public after the entire selection process for the Civil Services Examination 2026 and the Indian Forest Service (IFS) Examination 2026 has concluded.

Full Focus Now on Mains Preparation
With the Preliminary stage concluded, the 13,343 successful candidates now face the major challenge of the Main Examination. Over the next two months, they must engage in intensive preparation covering answer writing, essay writing, their optional subject, and General Studies. Every year, lakhs of aspirants take the UPSC exam dreaming of becoming IAS or IPS officers, yet only a few hundred secure final selection. Consequently, for those who have cleared the Prelims, the "real" examination is considered to be just beginning.
