Raga Megh Varanasi: This time the scorching afternoons of Jyeshtha and Ashadh have scorched the entire Purvanchal including Varanasi. Strong sunlight, humidity and continuously rising temperatures have affected people's daily routine. In such a situation, a unique initiative regarding wishing for rain was seen in Kashi, the city of religion and culture, where a wonderful confluence of devotion, music and tradition was seen.
Artists and music practitioners organized special cultural rituals to please Lord Indra at the historical Rewa Ghat of Kashi. The purpose of this event was not only to wish for rain, but also to keep alive the age-old cultural tradition in which music is considered a medium to reach God.
In the calm atmosphere of the morning, the first ritual of worshiping Mother Ganga was done. Artists offered traditional Piri to Mother Ganga and prayed for public welfare and timely good rains. Devotees and local people present at the ghat also participated in this special event. The entire atmosphere was filled with spiritual energy amid the worship and chanting of Vedic mantras.
The most important part of this ritual was the organization of classical music. Famous Shehnai player Pandit Mahendra Prasanna of Kashi Vishwanath Temple and his team played Raga Megh on Shehnai. Raga Megh is considered to have special importance in Indian classical music. According to folk beliefs and cultural traditions, this raga is associated with the rainy season and clouds. With this belief, the artists prayed for rain from Indra Dev through songs. Music lovers believe that classical ragas are not just a medium of entertainment, but establish a deep connection between nature and human emotions.
After the playing of Raga Megh, the artists started a series of traditional bhajans and classical presentations. When folkloric hymns like “Indra Barso Re Kashi Nagariya” echoed amidst the melodious tunes of Shehnai, the atmosphere of the ghat became completely devotional. The people present at the ghat described this cultural event as a beautiful example of the living tradition and spiritual heritage of Kashi.
The identity of Kashi is not limited to religious events only. History is witness to the fact that whenever the city has faced any natural crisis or social challenge, the artists, scholars and saints here have tried to unite the society through their art and traditions. Be it drought conditions, extreme heat or any other natural challenge, Kashi has a long standing tradition of collective prayer through music, devotion and cultural events.
This event held at Rewa Ghat once again proved that the tradition of Shehnai and classical music is still alive in Kashi. The musical heritage which was recognized across the world by the great Shehnai player Ustad Bismillah Khan, is still carrying forward the same tradition through the new generation of artists. Local people believe that whether the weather changes or not, such events definitely help in connecting the society to its cultural roots. This is the reason why in Kashi, music is not only considered an art but also an integral part of faith and life.
