DON'T MISS A MOMENT OF THE WORLD CUP
Dino Zoff, the legendary Italian goalkeeper, has voiced his support for Juventus’ pursuit of Emiliano ‘Dibu’ Martinez, describing the Argentine’s expressive nature as no obstacle to success in Turin. The former Italy captain also shared his thoughts on the futures of Dusan Vlahovic and long-term target Domenico Berardi as the Bianconeri look to rebuild their squad.
Legendary support for Martinez
Zoff, who knows exactly what it takes to excel between the posts for Juventus, has made no secret of his admiration for the Aston Villa star. Despite Martinez’s reputation for fiery behaviour and showmanship, Zoff insists that what truly counts for a club of Juventus’ stature is his exceptional ability as a goalkeeper.
Speaking to Tuttosport, the 1982 World Cup winner made his opinion clear on the Argentine’s potential move. “At Juve, results are what matter, and players can behave as they wish on the pitch as long as they contribute to the team’s success. It doesn’t matter whether a goalkeeper is eccentric or reserved – what’s important is that he saves as he should. The Argentine has proven he can do that both in the Premier League and for his national side. He excites me,” Zoff remarked.
Martinez nearing Juventus switch
Zoff’s remarks come amid growing reports that Juventus are closing in on the 33-year-old’s signature. It is believed that the Argentina international has already given a verbal agreement to join the Italian giants, signalling his desire to test himself in Serie A following a successful spell in England.
To facilitate the move, Martinez is said to be ready to lower his current Premier League salary in order to fit into Juventus’ wage structure. The World Cup-winning goalkeeper views the Turin-based club as the ideal destination for the next stage of his career after his impressive displays in Aston Villa’s Europa League campaign.
Boost for Argentina ahead of World Cup opener
While speculation about his club future continues, Martinez’s immediate focus remains on international duty with Argentina, the reigning world champions. There had been concerns about a fractured ring finger that put his participation in their 2026 World Cup opener against Algeria at risk.
However, Argentina head coach Lionel Scaloni has provided a positive update on the situation, assuring fans that Martinez is fit to play. “Emiliano is fine, Emiliano is available for tomorrow. If he continues as he has over the last couple of days, I think he will play,” Scaloni confirmed.
This development is a major relief for the Albiceleste, who are determined to maintain their strong momentum heading into the tournament after an impressive qualifying campaign.
Vlahovic’s uncertain future
In addition to discussing Martinez, Zoff also addressed the ongoing uncertainty surrounding Serbian striker Dusan Vlahovic. The forward has faced an inconsistent season due to injury troubles, fuelling speculation about whether he will remain at the Allianz Stadium as Juventus manage their finances.
“If we consider the recent period – between last season’s competition and this season’s injuries – it’s difficult to make a full assessment as he’s played too little. I like him; I think he’s a quality centre-forward. It’s up to Juve to decide, depending on their financial situation, whether they should make an effort to keep him,” Zoff explained about the former Fiorentina player.
