Cape Verde's veteran goalkeeper Vozinha has shared an emotional personal story following his nation's remarkable 0-0 draw with Spain at the World Cup, one of the tournament's most stunning upsets. Despite his outstanding performance at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which earned him the Player of the Match award, the 40-year-old revealed that his mother could not attend his career-defining match because of visa complications.

A night that changed African football history

It was a landmark evening in Atlanta as Cape Verde made their debut in the men’s World Cup finals by holding the reigning European champions to a goalless draw. The Blue Sharks defied expectations to earn a point against a Spanish side filled with world-class stars, largely thanks to Vozinha’s heroics in goal. The Chaves goalkeeper, who plays in Portugal’s second division, made seven crucial saves to deny Spain and ensure a clean sheet for his team.

Vozinha was the emotional leader of the Cape Verdean side, inspiring his teammates with his calm presence and determination. Yet, amid the celebrations, he couldn’t help but think of those who were unable to witness his proudest moment in person.

Visa problems keep family away

Speaking to the press after the historic match, Vozinha opened up about the challenges that prevented his family from joining him in the United States. He said, “I cried after the game because I grew up with my grandparents when I was a kid, and they could not be there. They passed away a few years ago. My mum could not be here either due to a visa issue and the money we had to pay for it. We did not manage to do this in time.”

Despite the absence of his loved ones, Vozinha emphasised the collective pride of his country. He continued, “This is a message of thank you to everybody in Cape Verde. We are very happy after this; this group of players have worked a lot to live this moment. It’s a day to be proud and satisfied.”

Setting new World Cup benchmarks

Vozinha’s appearance was not only crucial for the result but also entered the record books. At 40 years and 12 days old, he became the oldest player to make his debut in a nation’s first-ever World Cup match. Only Egypt’s legendary goalkeeper Essam El Hadary was older when he made his World Cup debut at 45 years and 161 days in 2018.

Reflecting on his achievement, Vozinha said, “I am so proud about being man of the match. For me it’s an honour to represent the country I love. We are from a very small place, and our qualification path was very difficult too. Today, our dream came true by competing against a team like Spain. I am very proud of all the people involved in that process. We work in life to have moments like this. I am 40 now, but I was not a professional up until I was 25. This is a reward for all this journey.”

A message to his younger self

With matches against Uruguay and Saudi Arabia still to come in Group C, Cape Verde have genuine aspirations of advancing to the knockout stage. For Vozinha, the journey from a late-blooming professional to a World Cup icon feels surreal. The goalkeeper, who has also played in Moldova, Slovakia, and Cyprus, reflected on his growth and the lessons learned along the way.

He told reporters, “I would tell 18-year-old Vozinha to be really proud of himself. He worked a lot. To be honest, I never dreamt of stuff like this when I was a kid, but after this game I can tell my younger version that it was all worth it.”

Spain’s path ahead in the World Cup

While Cape Verde celebrated a historic draw, questions remain about how far Spain can go in the tournament after being held scoreless in their opening match. The result has set the stage for an intriguing Group C battle in the days ahead.
