Cape Verde’s head coach Bubista has defended his side’s deep defensive strategy after they secured a surprising draw against Spain at the World Cup. Even though La Roja dominated possession, the coach maintained that his players controlled the contest through discipline, structure, and organisation, earning a valuable point against one of the tournament’s favourites.
Cape Verde frustrate Spain with composed defensive display
In one of the most unexpected results of the World Cup group stage, Cape Verde held Spain to a goalless draw in Group H. Spain dictated possession for most of the match but failed to find a breakthrough against a compact and well-drilled Cape Verde defence. Despite spending long periods without the ball, Bubista’s side remained disciplined and limited Spain’s clear chances. The result not only earned a precious point but also showcased the underdogs’ ability to stand firm against one of international football’s strongest teams.
Bubista explains his concept of match control
Following the match, Bubista rejected the notion that possession alone equals control, explaining that his team’s defensive organisation allowed them to dictate the rhythm of the encounter in their own way.
“Of course, we can say that Spain had possession of the ball almost all of the time, but controlling the match is not just possession of the ball,” Bubista said.
“We did it in a different way. Naturally, we would have liked to have more attacking transitions, but the Spanish team is very difficult to play against, so we are satisfied with this. Teams these days excel in defensive organisation, and in a World Cup, statistically, matches are often won through transition play or from stationary balls. Therefore, we have to prepare ourselves accordingly.”
A performance built on resilience and unity
Bubista described the display as an embodiment of Cape Verde’s national spirit and the determination driving their World Cup campaign.
“We have always said that we wanted everyone to see our country, our team,” he added. “We have shown organisation and courage, and this is proof of what our nation represents — resilience and the will to overcome challenges.
“Before arriving here, I said that our aim was to compete at the highest level. We knew there would be difficulties, but we are determined to do everything possible to overcome obstacles.”
Goalkeeper Vozinha was named Player of the Match after producing several crucial saves, though Bubista emphasised that the clean sheet was a product of collective effort rather than individual brilliance.
He stated: “He was the best player on the pitch, and he deserves congratulations. But I believe our entire team performed excellently in defensive terms. Of course, he is there to help the team, and I am happy for him being chosen as the best player of the match. Still, I think the team as a whole did a spectacular job.”
Cape Verde aim to build on their statement result
The draw provides Cape Verde with confidence and momentum as they move forward in the group stage. Their next challenge will be maintaining that defensive solidity while creating more attacking opportunities on the counter. Having proven capable of frustrating one of the tournament favourites, Cape Verde will now look to convert that resilience into further points when they face Uruguay on June 21.
Spain’s World Cup journey continues
Spain will now need to regroup and find greater cutting edge in attack as they aim to progress deep into the tournament after being held by the spirited Cape Verde side.
