Former Liverpool goalkeeper David James has urged the Reds to consider a bold and unexpected move for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford. Despite the long-standing rivalry between the two clubs, James believes the England international’s talent is unquestionable and that he could rediscover his best form under the guidance of Andoni Iraola.

James supports surprising Liverpool move for Rashford

According to James, Liverpool should not rule out the possibility of making an approach for Rashford, calling it one of the most unexpected transfer suggestions involving two of the Premier League’s fiercest rivals. The former England goalkeeper said he remains confident in Rashford’s technical ability and football intelligence, which he describes as among the finest in the game, even though there have been doubts about the player’s recent performances and long-term prospects at Old Trafford.

James explains why Rashford fits Liverpool’s style

His remarks come as uncertainty continues to surround Rashford’s future, following reports that Barcelona decided against triggering a £30 million option to make his loan deal permanent. This has left the England international’s next move unclear.

Speaking to BetVictor, James said: “If I were Liverpool, I’d definitely try to sign Marcus Rashford. I really would. Whether he plays on the left or the right isn’t a big concern. The key is to bring him in first and then give it time to determine his best position. I think he’s an outstanding footballer. His football intelligence is exceptional, and his ability is superb.”

Iraola tipped to reignite Rashford’s form

James expressed confidence that the 28-year-old forward still possesses world-class talent, referencing his performances in Spain as proof. He also suggested that Liverpool’s current coaching setup under Andoni Iraola could help the forward rediscover his top-level form.

“We saw during his time at Barcelona that when Marcus Rashford is in the right frame of mind, he’s capable of delivering extraordinary football,” James continued. “I doubt Liverpool will actually go through with signing him, but football rivalries shouldn’t stop clubs from targeting top players. Someone like Andoni Iraola has the qualities to build an environment in which Rashford could truly flourish.”

A big decision awaits

As things stand, Rashford remains under contract with Manchester United until 2028, meaning any permanent transfer would require significant negotiations between all parties involved. Reports from The Sun suggest that Michael Carrick would be open to welcoming Rashford back into the squad if a permanent move elsewhere fails to materialise this summer. However, a final decision on his future is expected only after the World Cup, as the forward continues to focus on helping England chase football’s top honour in North America.
