Iran midfielder Mohammad Mohebi has spoken out to clarify the meaning behind his controversial goal celebration during his team’s FIFA World Cup opener against New Zealand. The gesture, which many perceived as politically charged, has sparked widespread debate during an already tense period for Team Melli.
Mohebi’s celebration draws attention
The 27-year-old midfielder found the back of the net in the 64th minute to level the score for Iran in their World Cup group-stage clash with New Zealand, which eventually ended in a 2-2 draw. However, his post-goal celebration quickly became the primary talking point. Mohebi was seen pointing two fingers toward his arm, then extending two fingers on his right hand and moving them through the air—a movement many interpreted as resembling a ‘gun’ gesture.
Mohebi offers clarification
The reaction online was swift, with some fans and commentators urging FIFA to review the incident amid heightened political sensitivities surrounding Iran’s participation in the tournament. Addressing the controversy, Mohebi dismissed any political connotation, insisting the gesture was purely celebratory.
He explained: “I wanted to say thank you to all Iranians who live in Los Angeles—they create such a brilliant atmosphere. The celebration just came to my mind, and I did it [gestures] for all our fans. It’s only a celebration, nothing more.”
Rezaeian responds to political questions
Speculation grew further after teammate Ramin Rezaeian commented following the match. Rezaeian, who also scored, covered his face with his shirt as he ran toward supporters—another act that drew attention. When questioned about his own celebration, the defender admitted that it carried a political aspect but chose not to elaborate.
“It’s something political (my goal celebration), but I don’t want to talk about that,” he said. Rezaeian then attempted to steer the discussion back to football, adding: “We are here to answer football questions. If there are issues among us (the Iranian people), they are internal matters.”
FIFA to evaluate next steps
FIFA has been approached for comment regarding Mohebi’s gesture, and attention now turns to whether the governing body will decide to open an investigation. Meanwhile, Iran will continue their World Cup campaign with their next Group G fixture against Belgium in Los Angeles on June 21.
