Ruben Amorim has officially returned to management following his short-lived and disappointing tenure at Manchester United. AC Milan have confirmed the appointment of the Portuguese coach as their new head coach, entrusting him with a team that features United States Men’s National Team star Christian Pulisic. The Rossoneri, who will compete in the Europa League next season, are hopeful that Amorim’s arrival will introduce a renewed tactical philosophy.
AC Milan unveil new head coach
AC Milan have officially announced Ruben Amorim as the new head coach of their men’s first team. The 41-year-old tactician returns to the touchline after parting ways with Manchester United earlier this year, taking over from Massimiliano Allegri. Milan’s management believe his experience and tactical acumen will be key to restoring the club’s competitive edge.
As per reports, Amorim has signed an initial two-year deal that will keep him at San Siro until 2028. His base salary is set at €3.5 million per season, with additional performance-related bonuses linked to Champions League qualification. The Rossoneri have struggled in recent seasons, missing out on Europe’s elite competition for two consecutive years. The Milan hierarchy have monitored Amorim for a long time, convinced that his forward-thinking tactical style can rejuvenate a squad featuring key players such as Christian Pulisic.
RedBird praises Amorim’s modern tactical vision
Gerry Cardinale, managing partner of RedBird Capital Partners, who sanctioned the appointment, expressed confidence in Amorim’s philosophy and leadership. The coach made a significant name for himself at Sporting CP, leading the Portuguese side to two league titles with a distinctive and effective brand of football. “We have followed Ruben for several years, and his achievements at Sporting are outstanding, showcasing exactly the style of football we want to see. He is among the most prepared and innovative managers of the new European generation — young, ambitious, and committed to a proactive style built on controlling possession, modern pressing, and tactical clarity,” said Gerry Cardinale. “Ruben advocates attacking football driven by high pressing and quick transitions that create scoring opportunities. His vision aligns perfectly with ours, and his leadership and track record in developing players make him an ideal fit. We are delighted to welcome Ruben to the Club.”
Amorim ready for the San Siro challenge
Although Amorim had initially planned to take a break after departing Old Trafford, he was ultimately drawn to the challenge of coaching the seven-time European champions. His quick return also brings financial benefit to Manchester United, who faced a compensation cost of £16.7 million. During his official unveiling, Amorim spoke passionately about joining the Italian giants. “There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine,” he said. “I fully understand what this Club stands for — its history, prestige, and an extraordinary global fanbase. This is a challenge I take on with immense pride and enthusiasm, fully aware of what these colours represent. I am eager to begin and to experience firsthand the passion that drives AC Milan.”
Next steps for AC Milan
Amorim will travel to Italy immediately to begin pre-season preparations for the upcoming Serie A and Europa League campaigns, together with his coaching team. Meanwhile, AC Milan are actively pursuing a new sporting director, with Markus Krosche and Devin Ozek identified as the leading candidates. The partnership between Amorim and the incoming director will be crucial as the club embarks on a major rebuilding phase aimed at restoring Milan’s standing in European football.
