Thomas Tuchel may have recently agreed to an extension as England head coach, but his long-term future with the national side depends heavily on how his team performs at the upcoming World Cup. Although his new contract is intended to carry him through to Euro 2028, it has now been revealed that the Football Association (FA) has included specific protective clauses.
Performance clause places World Cup pressure on Tuchel
The FA has confirmed that Tuchel’s tenure could be cut short if England fail to meet expectations at this summer’s World Cup in North America. The German tactician was handed a two-year extension in February, but the agreement is conditional on the Three Lions achieving satisfactory results in the tournament.
FA Chief Executive Mark Bullingham disclosed that “performance clauses” were written into Tuchel’s deal, giving the governing body flexibility should the campaign in the United States, Mexico, and Canada end unsuccessfully. Speaking at England’s training base in Kansas City, Bullingham commented, “There are performance clauses in every single FA contract, but I won’t go into the specifics of what they include.”
Rationale behind pre-tournament renewal
The decision to renew Tuchel’s contract before the World Cup kicked off was a strategic effort to avoid unnecessary distractions. Had the FA delayed, Tuchel would have entered the tournament with his previous contract due to expire at its conclusion, which could have sparked speculation about his future and interest from major European clubs.
Bullingham defended the timing, stressing that a high-profile manager like Tuchel would not remain on the market indefinitely. “The truth is, he’s an elite manager who would always attract interest, and we knew we had someone doing an excellent job. We couldn’t just expect him to wait and see how things unfold,” he said. The FA also wanted stability ahead of a major home tournament, with Bullingham adding that for Euro 2028, they desired a manager who had “been there and done it.”
FA retains control over Tuchel’s future
While the performance clauses protect the FA if results falter, the organisation is confident it can also stop Tuchel from walking away for a club offer. When asked if the contract includes a clause allowing Tuchel to leave by choice, Bullingham was firm about the FA’s authority.
“We can hold him to the contract,” Bullingham asserted, underlining that the FA intends to retain Tuchel as long as objectives are met. For now, Tuchel remains charged with ending England’s prolonged wait for a major trophy. However, his supposed security through Euro 2028 depends entirely on how the team performs in North America this summer.
Pressure mounts despite flawless record
Since taking charge, Tuchel’s record has been impeccable — winning all eight of his competitive fixtures without conceding a single goal. Yet, some of his squad selections have divided opinion. Supporters previously expressed “shock, derision and a hefty dose of incredulity” after his tactical decisions drew criticism, particularly following the omission of players such as Adam Wharton and Jack Grealish in earlier matches.
Despite those debates, the internal focus within the camp remains firmly on Group L. England will begin their World Cup campaign against Croatia on Wednesday, before facing Ghana and Panama in their subsequent group fixtures.
How far can England go in the World Cup remains to be seen — but Tuchel’s immediate future may depend on it.
