DON'T MISS A MOMENT OF THE WORLD CUP
Chasing Cristiano Ronaldo’s dream! Portugal determined to ‘give a little bit more’ in pursuit of World Cup triumph for CR7.
Former Portugal winger Nani has expressed confidence that the national team will go above and beyond to help Cristiano Ronaldo achieve his ultimate ambition of winning the World Cup in 2026. After already securing three major international titles together, the squad remains motivated to deliver another historic victory, inspired by the global admiration for their legendary captain.
A proven winning legacy
During an appearance on the Portugal Football Summit Podcast, with his remarks shared by O Jogo, Nani spoke with great optimism about the national team’s readiness for the upcoming tournament. The ex-Manchester United player believes that Portugal possess the perfect blend of youth and experience needed to mount a serious challenge, built upon their history of success. Under Ronaldo’s guidance, Portugal have already tasted glory, winning the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and lifting two UEFA Nations League titles in 2019 and 2025. “I believe we have young talents who have already demonstrated remarkable maturity, alongside experienced players in our squad,” he said. The veteran emphasised that unity will be the key factor if Portugal are to reach the pinnacle once again.
Giving everything for Cristiano Ronaldo
The 39-year-old former winger underlined the immense influence of his former teammate, noting that the squad will dig deeper to honour Ronaldo’s legacy by capturing the one trophy that has eluded him. “Ronaldo’s presence on the pitch will make a difference. He will inspire others to push themselves a little harder for him, for the team, and for the national side, because there is a beautiful history behind all this, and we are part of that story. We know that Cristiano doesn’t just mobilise Portuguese supporters; he unites fans across the globe. We’re going to have many people from different countries cheering for Portugal,” Nani said.
Counting on a midfield leader
In addition to Ronaldo’s star power, Nani also praised another vital player who will play a major role in Portugal’s campaign—Manchester United’s midfield dynamo, Bruno Fernandes. He commended Fernandes for his consistency, mentality, and relentless drive for excellence. “Talking about Bruno is easy because he has been an outstanding player for many years. I’ve played alongside him, and I know his mindset and his hunger to win. He strives to be the best in his position and always gives something extra to the team. We can always rely on him to make a difference,” Nani added. The veteran himself recently returned to action with FC Aktobe, marking his comeback to the sport he loves.
What lies ahead for Portugal?

Following that match, Roberto Martinez’s side will take on Uzbekistan next Tuesday, before completing the group stage against Colombia on June 28.
