The Toronto Blue Jays have spent much of the 2026 season waiting for their pitching staff to get healthy.
On paper, few teams can match a rotation featuring Dylan Cease, Shane Bieber, Kevin Gausman, and Trey Yesavage. When all four are available, Toronto has a legitimate case as one of baseball’s most dangerous teams. The problem is that the Blue Jays have rarely had the chance to see that group together for an extended period this year.
Injuries have forced the club to constantly adjust. While recent returns have helped stabilize things, the front office may still look for another major addition before the MLB trade deadline arrives.
One name that continues to generate attention is Minnesota Twins starter Joe Ryan.
According to recent reports and speculation around the league, Toronto could view Ryan as a realistic target as it searches for more pitching depth. The Blue Jays recently welcomed back Max Scherzer
and Dylan Cease, while Shane Bieber is moving closer to returning as well. Even so, the club knows how quickly injuries can derail a season.
Cody Ponce was lost for the year after suffering a knee injury in April. That setback highlighted how fragile pitching depth can be during a long campaign.
Ryan would immediately strengthen Toronto’s rotation. The right hander has established himself as one of the more dependable starters in the American League. He throws strikes consistently, limits walks, and has shown the ability to handle pressure situations.
For a Blue Jays team with championship ambitions, adding a pitcher of Ryan’s caliber could provide valuable insurance heading into October.
Some observers have connected Toronto to Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, but that path appears far more complicated.
Skubal is one of the best pitchers in baseball. Because of that, the trade cost would likely be enormous. Toronto would have to surrender multiple premium prospects and still face uncertainty about his long term future with the organization.
Ryan presents a different situation.
The Twins have struggled to remain competitive, making them a more logical trade partner if they decide to sell. Ryan is also expected to draw significant interest from contenders across the league, but the overall acquisition cost could be more manageable than what it would take to land Skubal.
That balance matters. The Blue Jays are trying to win now without completely emptying their farm system.
Toronto’s roster is already strong enough to compete with the best teams in baseball. The lineup has delivered in key moments and the rotation is beginning to regain important pieces.
Still, championship teams often make one aggressive move before the deadline to address potential weaknesses before they become postseason problems.
Joe Ryan fits that description perfectly. He offers durability, quality innings, and playoff-caliber talent without the overwhelming price tag attached to some of the market’s biggest names.
As the deadline approaches, the biggest question is no longer whether the Blue Jays need another starter. It is whether Toronto believes Joe Ryan is the final piece that can turn a talented contender into a genuine World Series favorite.
