Amit Shah Reviews National Cybercrime Helpline Operations

On Wednesday, Amit Shah, the Union Minister for Home Affairs and Cooperation, conducted a review of the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930. He instructed officials to enhance the system by incorporating artificial intelligence (AI) and support in multiple languages to simplify the reporting process. Shah also emphasized the need for agencies to collaborate with state authorities to ensure that every call yields accurate results and that complaints related to freezing bank accounts are addressed effectively.


Launch of National Cybercrime Reporting Portal

To strengthen the reporting and response mechanisms for cybercrime incidents across the nation, the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal (NCRP) was launched on August 30, 2019, under the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C). According to the government’s cybercrime portal, the previous version of the reporting portal, created under the 'Prevention of Cyber Crimes Against Women and Children' (CCPWC) scheme, was limited to complaints related to child pornography (CP) and sexual exploitation content associated with rape or gang rape (RGR). The new NCRP has broadened its scope to encompass all types of cybercrimes, providing citizens with a comprehensive national platform.


Integrated Ecosystem for Financial Fraud

Amit Shah dedicated the NCRP to the nation on January 20, 2020. The government portal also indicates that a common integrated ecosystem has been established to tackle the increasing complexity of financial fraud. This system includes law enforcement agencies, banks, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), financial intermediaries, payment wallets, and the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), all working together to ensure swift and effective action.


Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting System

Additionally, a 'Citizen Financial Cyber Fraud Reporting and Management System' has been created for the rapid reporting of financial cyber fraud occurring through digital banking, credit and debit cards, UPI, and other payment systems. Complaints can be lodged via the National Cybercrime Helpline 1930 or the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal.
