Neymar has returned to the training ground, working individually for the first time since joining Brazil’s World Cup camp, marking a crucial milestone in his recovery from a calf injury that had put his participation in doubt. The forward’s solo session offered a significant morale boost for the Selecao squad as preparations continue in the United States.
Encouraging signs from New Jersey
The Brazilian talisman, sidelined for a month with a right calf injury, was spotted training on the sidelines on Tuesday in Morristown, New Jersey, according to ESPN. This was his first session on the grass since the national team arrived at their base. The sight of Neymar lacing up his boots again has given hope to fans eager to see their star return to action.
The Brazil Football Confederation (CBF) shared an upbeat assessment of his progress, confirming that Neymar had “taken another step in his recovery process” by returning to light training. Video clips released by the CBF showed the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward jogging and performing running drills under the supervision of Carlo Ancelotti’s coaching staff.
Knockout rounds remain the main objective
Despite being named in Brazil’s final World Cup squad, Neymar joined the camp under an injury cloud after sustaining the calf issue while playing for Santos on May 17. The 34-year-old is currently recovering from a Grade II muscle injury, which requires careful rehabilitation to prevent any recurrence.
Reports in Brazil indicate that the medical team is adopting a cautious approach with a long-term view, aiming to have Neymar fully fit for the knockout phase. This likely means he will miss Brazil’s remaining Group C matches against Haiti and Scotland. ESPN noted that Neymar underwent further medical tests on Monday to assess healing progress, though the CBF has yet to release the findings publicly.
Ancelotti shows faith in Neymar’s influence
Neymar watched from the bench during Brazil’s 1-1 draw with Morocco on Saturday, continuing his recovery and not dressed to play. Head coach Carlo Ancelotti expressed confidence that his star forward would soon rejoin full team training, emphasising that Neymar’s influence extends beyond his footballing skills.
“Neymar is working very hard to recover as soon as possible,” Ancelotti said before the Morocco match. “We expect him to be back with the group next week. We brought him into the squad not only for his technical talent, which is unquestionable, but also for his leadership and the positive example he sets for the younger players.”
Returning from a long international absence
This World Cup marks a major comeback opportunity for Neymar after an extended spell away from international football due to injuries. He last represented Brazil on October 17, 2023, when he sustained a severe ACL and meniscus tear during a World Cup qualifier against Uruguay. That setback led to a prolonged recovery period, with the Santos forward spending roughly 700 days out of action through various injury and rehabilitation phases. He is expected to remain on the sidelines when Brazil take on Haiti this Friday.
With Neymar’s recovery progressing, Brazilian supporters are hopeful that their star man will be fit to play a decisive role when the knockout rounds begin.
