Manchester United supporters have been advised not to celebrate Pep Guardiola’s impending departure from their city rivals, with Patrice Evra expressing that the news of the Spaniard leaving Manchester City is ‘sad’ for everyone connected with English football. The club has officially confirmed that the legendary manager will bid farewell to the Etihad Stadium at the end of this summer, a development that many at Old Trafford have received with enthusiasm.

Guardiola’s exit comes after a glittering 10-year spell with Manchester City, during which he guided the club to an incredible tally of 20 trophies. His collection includes six Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League triumph, achievements that have left Manchester United trailing their neighbours during the same period.

In contrast, United have managed only five trophies over the same timeframe and are still striving to re-establish domestic dominance at the ‘Theatre of Dreams’. However, with Michael Carrick now breathing new life into the Red Devils, hopes are rising that they could once again emerge as serious contenders for the Premier League crown by the 2026-27 season. Guardiola’s absence could make that quest slightly easier.

The former Barcelona and Bayern Munich manager will step away from his demanding role at the end of the current campaign, having added both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup to his extensive list of honours. Reports suggest he intends to take a break, though he has also been linked with a potential move to Cristiano Ronaldo’s Saudi Pro League champions, Al-Nassr.

Although Manchester United fans are understandably thrilled to see one of their fiercest rivals leave, Evra insists now is not the time for celebration. Speaking to GOAL in association with Stake, the former Red Devils left-back, who himself enjoyed Premier League and Champions League success at Old Trafford, said: “I’m sad. I’m sad because he’s a manager I respect a lot for what he’s contributed. No, I give him a farewell.”

He continued: “Why should I be happy? The club’s structure is stronger than any manager or player. So guys, don’t celebrate. First, don’t celebrate too soon. Honestly, I don’t see City collapsing.”

“I’m sad because we’re losing a great manager. I don’t know if he’ll stay in the Premier League or go elsewhere, but losing Pep Guardiola is a loss for football.”

When confirming his departure, Guardiola issued a heartfelt statement via Manchester City’s official website, saying: “What a journey we’ve had together. Don’t ask me why I’m leaving. There’s no specific reason, but deep down, I know it’s my time. Nothing lasts forever—if it did, I would still be here. What will remain eternal are the feelings, the people, the memories, and the love I have for my Manchester City.”

He added: “This city was built on hard work and determination. You can see it in the colour of the bricks, in the people who worked long hours in the factories, in the Pankhursts, the unions, the music—all of it born from the Industrial Revolution that changed the world. I think I came to understand that spirit, and my teams did too. We worked, we suffered, we fought, and we did it our way.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for trusting me, for challenging me, and for loving me. It has been unbelievably fun. Love you all.”

Guardiola’s decision to step down means both Manchester clubs will appoint permanent managers this summer. Reports suggest that former Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca, who previously worked under Guardiola at City, is the leading candidate to succeed him at the Etihad Stadium.

Meanwhile, at Old Trafford, interim coach Michael Carrick has been rewarded with a permanent contract after guiding United towards UEFA Champions League qualification. The former midfielder now takes charge with a substantial transfer budget and the backing to restore the club to the summit of English football.
