Inter Milan have strengthened their squad for the upcoming season by reaching a complete agreement to sign Lazio goalkeeper Ivan Provedel. The 32-year-old custodian is set to join the reigning Serie A champions after his playing time in Rome diminished following a managerial change.

Inter Find Their Goalkeeping Solution in Rome

The Nerazzurri, fresh from their Serie A triumph, have made a decisive move in the summer transfer window by closing in on a deal for Provedel. Inter have been actively seeking an experienced and dependable goalkeeper, particularly in light of veteran Yann Sommer’s expected departure, as per reports. While Josep Martinez is tipped to take on a more significant role, head coach Cristian Chivu has specifically requested the signing of Provedel to ensure strong competition for the starting position.

According to transfer expert Alfredo Pedulla, discussions between Inter and Lazio have led to a breakthrough. Lazio initially demanded around €5 million, while Inter proposed closer to €2.5 million. Eventually, both parties agreed on a compromise fee of €3 million to complete the move. With the clubs now in full agreement, Provedel is expected to finalise his transfer to San Siro shortly.

End of an Era for Lazio

Provedel’s exit ends a four-year spell in the Italian capital, where he had become a fan favourite. His situation at Lazio’s Stadio Olimpico changed significantly after Maurizio Sarri’s departure, with the coach now at Atalanta. Sarri had been Provedel’s strongest supporter, but incoming manager Gennaro Gattuso, who is close to being appointed, has different tactical preferences. Gattuso has reportedly already decided on Christos Mandas as his first-choice goalkeeper, with young talent Edoardo Motta serving as his main backup.

Finding himself surplus to requirements in Gattuso’s new setup, Provedel chose to embark on a new chapter with the Scudetto winners. The former Spezia player has already agreed to personal terms with Inter, signing a three-year contract worth €1.5 million per season plus performance-based bonuses. The deal ensures his place at the top level of Italian football until 2029.

Fulfilling a Lifelong Dream

For Provedel, joining Inter is not only a career advancement but also the realisation of a lifelong dream. His agent, Gianni Riva, spoke about the emotional significance of this move for the player. Speaking to La Lazio Siamo Noi, Riva confirmed the deal’s advanced stage and emphasised that Provedel’s motivation goes beyond being a backup option.

“We’re very close; we’ve been working in the right direction,” Riva said. “I hope this transfer can be wrapped up soon. Provedel has supported Inter since childhood, and for him, this is the pinnacle of his career. He’s coming to compete for his place, and we’re optimistic. He’s had a long journey, and the timing feels right. As for contact with Chivu, I don’t think so — but there’s not much time left, and we remain confident.”

Provedel’s Record and Lazio’s Missed European Spot

During the 2025-26 season, Provedel featured in 29 matches across all competitions for Lazio, conceding 30 goals and registering 12 clean sheets. Despite his strong performances, Lazio endured a difficult season, finishing ninth in Serie A and consequently missing out on European competition for the following campaign.
