Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will perform the bhoomi pujan of a state-of-the-art 10,000 tonne 'Aluminium Extrusion Press' at Yantra India Limited (YIL), Ordnance Factory Ambazari, located in Nagpur tomorrow, Friday (June 19). On this occasion, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Defense Production Secretary Sanjeev Kumar and many senior officials of the Department of Defense Production and Yantra India Limited will also be present.
The proposed extrusion press will be a major national asset in the defense manufacturing sector in the country. It will strengthen the country's capacity to produce large, high-strength and precision aluminum alloy extrusions to meet the needs of the defense and aerospace sectors. With this, large size, extremely strong and precise aluminum alloy components can be made in the country itself.
The project will also help in reducing import dependence of critical aluminum extruded components and support indigenous manufacturing under the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision. Till now, many important aluminum parts for the army and space sector had to be imported from abroad. But with the start of this project, our dependence on foreign countries will reduce significantly.
Also, this project will give impetus to 'self-reliant India'. The entire project has been prepared keeping in mind the 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which will promote indigenous manufacturing within the country.
Earlier, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh on Wednesday welcomed the country's annual defense production reaching an all-time high of Rs 1.78 lakh crore in the financial year 2025-26, citing the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the efforts of all stakeholders in the defense sector. In a post on social media platform
According to the Defense Ministry, this latest figure shows an increase of 15.6 percent compared to the production of Rs 1.54 lakh crore in the last financial year. It also shows an increase of 110 percent since the financial year 2020-21, when defense production was only Rs 84,643 crore. Whereas defense production in the country has increased almost four times from Rs 43,746 crore recorded in the financial year 2013-14.
The Defense Ministry said that during the financial year 2025-26, the share of Defense Public Sector Undertakings (DPSUs) and other public sector units in the total production was about 76 percent, while the contribution of the private sector was 24 percent. Whereas the share of the private sector has increased from 22 percent in the last financial year 2024-25 to an all-time high of around Rs 42,000 crore. And this also reflects its growing role in the defense manufacturing ecosystem of the country.
According to the ministry, the increase in domestic defense production has also contributed to the record performance in defense exports. India recorded defense exports worth Rs 38,424 crore during the financial year 2025-26, the highest ever. The Defense Minister also credited the continuous increase in production to the Department of Defense Production and industry stakeholders from both the public and private sectors.
