The prestigious QS World University Rankings 2027 have been released. Once again, MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in the US has retained its position as the world's number one university. Notably, MIT has held the top spot in these rankings for 15 consecutive years.
Good News for India
This year's rankings have brought positive news for India as well. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi remains the country's highest-ranked university. This year, IIT Delhi has emerged as the 118th best university globally, matching the best global ranking ever achieved by an Indian institution.
Gains for Indian Universities
A total of 52 Indian universities have secured a place in the QS rankings. While only 14 Indian institutions were included in the list in 2017, that number has now risen to 52. There has been a significant increase in the global presence of Indian universities over the past decade. Consequently, India has become the country with the fifth-largest representation in the global higher education system.
Improved Rankings for Universities
According to the ranking data, 26 of the 52 Indian institutions saw an improvement in their rankings. Nine universities maintained their positions, while 15 institutions experienced a decline. Additionally, two Indian universities have made their debut on this global list.
A notable feature of this year's rankings is that strong performance is not limited to IITs alone; several other universities across the country have also shown significant improvement. Jamia Millia Islamia, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), BITS Pilani, VIT, and Chandigarh University have achieved their best-ever rankings. A total of 18 Indian universities have recorded their best performance this year, including 13 non-IIT institutions.
Which universities showed the most improvement?
Institutions that demonstrated the most significant improvement include VIT, BITS Pilani, and Jamia Millia Islamia. VIT jumped 94 places to secure the 597th rank. Meanwhile, BITS Pilani climbed 93 spots to reach the 575th position. Jamia Millia Islamia also improved by more than 75 places, achieving the 686th rank.
Where does India stand?
According to the report, India's research output is also steadily strengthening; the country has now become the third-largest producer of research output globally. Furthermore, 11 Indian universities feature among the world's top 100 institutions for 'Citations per Faculty.' Additionally, six Indian universities have successfully secured a place in the global top 100 for 'Employer Reputation'—reflecting their standing among hiring companies.
