Thomas Tuchel began his tenure as England head coach with a commanding 4-2 win over Croatia at the 2026 World Cup, yet the German tactician was left frustrated by an incident before kick-off. Despite the positive result in Arlington, the former Chelsea manager has publicly appealed to FIFA to reconsider their stadium protocols after his first match in charge was marred by disruptions on the touchline.
Tuchel angered by pitchside photographers
Tuchel has implored FIFA to urgently modify their pre-match setup, claiming a “very special moment” was spoilt by a crowd of photographers. Making his World Cup debut on Wednesday night in Texas, the England boss was visibly irritated before the game even began, surrounded by media personnel and unable to properly view his players during the national anthems.
Although Tuchel chose not to sing ‘God Save The King’ and instead stood silently, he expressed clear annoyance that he could not see his team lined up. Broadcast footage from AT&T Stadium showed the German coach visibly exasperated by the close presence of photographers, who he said obstructed his sightline at what was meant to be a proud milestone in his managerial career.
‘I was waiting for this moment’
Speaking after England’s lively 4-2 victory, Tuchel did not hold back his disappointment. “I have to tell you something, I am begging FIFA to change the position of the photographers during the national anthem because I could not see my team in the national anthem,” he told the media. The coach, who acknowledged the emotional weight of the occasion, admitted the obstruction took away from what should have been a memorable experience.
“I was waiting for this moment. It was a very, very special moment today and I was standing in front of a wall of 50 photographers, half a metre away, and I could not see one single player. It ruined a little bit my experience. It is very emotional. When I was young and when I started coaching, this was too big to dream of this kind of occasion,” Tuchel added, reflecting on how the experience was diminished by the situation.
Touchline exchange with Jordan Pickford
The tension did not end before the whistle. Tuchel was also involved in a heated interaction with goalkeeper Jordan Pickford during the first half. Although Harry Kane had already put England ahead, the manager appeared dissatisfied with Pickford’s distribution under pressure.
Pitchside microphones picked up Tuchel issuing tactical instructions to the Everton shot-stopper, urging him to pass to the right-back rather than forcing risky balls while off balance. When Pickford seemed to reply from the pitch, Tuchel reportedly ended the exchange sharply, saying, “You know what you’re supposed to do, do as I told you!”
Kane and Bellingham lead England to victory
Despite Kane’s early brace, Croatia struck back to make it 2-2 by halftime. The Three Lions, however, regained control after Tuchel’s team talk, with second-half goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford sealing a 4-2 win in Group L.
The result leaves England at the top of their group heading into their next match against Ghana at the Gillette Stadium on Tuesday. While the victory sets a positive tone for Tuchel’s reign, the German coach’s insistence on both tactical precision and matchday organisation shows his determination to maintain the highest standards across every aspect of the game.
