Jude Bellingham revealed that playing with a “chip on my shoulder” pushed him to deliver his best performance as England opened their World Cup campaign with a thrilling 4-2 triumph against Croatia.

The 22-year-old midfielder netted the crucial third goal as Thomas Tuchel’s men began their Group L journey in Dallas with a commanding display.

Bellingham had missed the September and October international windows due to injury, leading to speculation over whether he would make the final squad for this summer’s tournament. His selection raised some eyebrows, particularly after Tuchel’s controversial comments last year — remarks he later apologised for — in which he reportedly said Bellingham’s mother found the midfielder’s attitude “repulsive”.

Nevertheless, the Real Madrid star was named in the squad and immediately justified his inclusion with an outstanding performance in England’s opener on Wednesday.

Speaking to BBC Sport, Bellingham said: “It has been a difficult season for me, but I’m feeling fresh, sharp, and stronger now. I’ve got a little bit of a chip on my shoulder, and that really helps me find focus and intensity early in the game.”

He added: “I know that criticism is part of being a footballer, and I don’t hold grudges against anyone who says negative things about me because sometimes, I do deserve it. Today, it felt good to show people what I’m really about.”

Bellingham’s ability to embrace Tuchel’s “brotherhood” philosophy was also questioned in the build-up to the tournament. Before kick-off in Dallas, there had been much debate about whether Bellingham or his close friend Morgan Rogers would start as England’s number 10. Tuchel ultimately chose Bellingham, who later dropped into a deeper midfield role during the match.

Reflecting on his performance, Bellingham said: “Personally, it was great to shut out the outside noise and show my country and my teammates just how dedicated I am to helping us win football matches. It was a brilliant team effort — in the first half, our intensity was good but our play with the ball wasn’t quite there. In the second half, we put everything together beautifully.”

He concluded: “To contribute and help my team and my country is one of the greatest honours. No matter what’s said outside, that sense of pride and honour never changes for me.”
