Brazil’s defender Danilo has emphasised that Neymar’s mere presence on the pitch can dramatically alter the team’s dynamic, even as the forward continues to recover from injury. With Carlo Ancelotti’s men under scrutiny after dropping points in their first match, the Selecao are pinning their hopes on the return of their talisman to reignite their attacking threat.

Brazil monitor Neymar’s recovery closely

Neymar continues to be a focal point within the Brazil squad despite having missed their 1-1 draw against Morocco in their World Cup opener. The forward is recuperating from a calf injury sustained while playing for Santos in May and is still building toward full match fitness.

There have been positive developments recently. After resuming individual training, Neymar has advanced to working with the ball alongside his teammates and was warmly welcomed back into the group with a traditional “tunnel of fire”. Nevertheless, Brazil’s coaching staff are said to be adopting a cautious approach. The Santos star remains doubtful for the upcoming clash against Haiti as they aim to avoid any recurrence of his muscle problems.

Danilo underscores Neymar’s impact

In a press conference, Danilo elaborated on why Neymar remains central to Brazil’s ambitions. The experienced full-back pointed out that Neymar’s influence extends well beyond goals and assists, as his presence forces opposing teams to adjust their defensive structures, creating more space for his teammates.

“When you have a player like Neymar, opponents become more anxious and call for extra help to mark him,” Danilo explained to reporters. “With two defenders focusing on him, one of our players will find themselves free. That helps a lot. Even just being on the pitch, he can disrupt the opposition. Of course, we must be realistic, but we hope he recovers fully and contributes again. His quality is already proven.”

Brazil warned against complacency

Following their frustrating draw against Morocco, Brazil sit third in Group C and know they cannot afford another setback when they face Haiti. Although they are expected to dominate, Danilo cautioned his teammates not to underestimate their opponents.

He said: “Did you see how Cape Verde defended against Spain? It’s about fighting for every ball, defending the scoreline, and playing with pride. Brazil must approach the match with solid tactical organisation, play safely, control the tempo, and go for the win. But thinking about a big-margin victory would be disrespectful. We shouldn’t assume possession will be ours by default—we must prove that we truly want the result.”

A decisive stretch of fixtures ahead

The Selecao’s next outing is a crucial must-win encounter against Haiti in Philadelphia as they attempt to strengthen their position in Group C. The outcome could prove vital for their chances of advancing comfortably to the knockout stage. For now, Neymar’s focus remains on regaining full fitness, and his participation against Haiti appears unlikely.

Can Brazil fulfil their World Cup ambitions?
