Lionel Messi’s father, Jorge Messi, is currently receiving medical care for a health condition, the Messi family has officially confirmed.

The Argentina captain was visibly emotional after scoring his first goal in his team’s 3-0 win against Algeria in their opening FIFA World Cup match, where he achieved a hat-trick. With those goals, Messi equalled Miroslav Klose’s record at the top of the all-time World Cup goalscoring chart.

When asked about the reason behind his emotions after the game, Messi explained: “Honestly, it’s something completely unrelated to football. I’ve gone through a few difficult and complicated days. I’m grateful to the whole team and delegation, to my teammates who have always stood by me. They gave me tremendous strength to get through this, and that’s all.”

On Thursday, the Messi family released a statement confirming reports that Jorge Messi was dealing with a health issue.

The statement said: “At this time, he is under medical supervision, recovering and making positive progress within the condition he is experiencing.”

Jorge Messi has played a crucial role throughout his son’s illustrious career, serving as his agent and business manager. Before taking on that role, he worked as a supervisor at a metal factory in their hometown of Rosario.

The family’s statement also expressed frustration with how certain media outlets handled the story following Argentina’s opening match. “The family wishes to express its deep discomfort with the lack of sensitivity, respect, and discretion shown by some individuals regarding what is purely a private family matter,” the statement read.

It further added, “The family would like to clarify that only his closest relatives possess accurate and reliable information about Jorge’s condition. Therefore, any account, comment, or information that does not directly come from the family or its official channels should not be considered valid or trustworthy.”

“In moments like these, we appeal for responsibility, restraint, and humanity. A person’s health and the emotional well-being of their loved ones should not become subjects of speculation or irresponsible media coverage.”

The statement concluded: “We are deeply grateful for the support, affection, and concern expressed by so many, and we ask that Jorge’s privacy, confidentiality, and that of his entire family be respected throughout this period.”
