Brazil have officially announced that Neymar will not feature in their upcoming World Cup match against Haiti, with the forward staying behind as his recovery from injury continues. The Santos star remains focused on regaining full fitness, and the national team’s medical staff have decided not to take any chances with their key player during this critical stage.

Neymar to stay in New Jersey

The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) confirmed that Neymar will miss the Selecao’s second group-stage encounter of the 2026 World Cup. The 34-year-old will not accompany the squad to Philadelphia, where Brazil are set to face Haiti on Friday evening.

Instead, the former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain attacker will remain at the team’s training base to continue his physical rehabilitation. “He will stay in New Jersey to optimise the final phase of his recovery process, making use of the excellent facilities at The Ridge hotel and the Columbia Park training centre,” the CBF stated in an official release.

Change in Ancelotti’s original plan

This decision represents a notable deviation from the initial strategy outlined by head coach Carlo Ancelotti and his technical team. Initially, Neymar was expected to stay with the travelling squad, gradually increasing his participation in collective training while maintaining close integration with the group during match preparations.

However, the medical department has opted for a stay-at-base approach, ensuring the forward has continuous access to specific recovery equipment. Neymar briefly returned to outdoor activities on Tuesday and joined team warm-ups on Wednesday, but he continues to follow a carefully managed training schedule distinct from the rest of the squad.

Focus shifts to the knockout stage

With Neymar ruled out of the Haiti clash, attention now turns to Brazil’s final group match against Scotland on June 24. His availability for that fixture remains uncertain, as the coaching staff weigh the importance of match sharpness against the risk of aggravating his injury ahead of the knockout rounds.

Ancelotti is expected to take a conservative approach, with the main goal being to have Brazil’s all-time leading scorer fit for the elimination phase. Neymar’s response to upcoming technical and tactical sessions will ultimately decide whether he plays any role in the group finale or is saved for the round of 16.

Danilo underlines Neymar’s vital influence

Despite his absence, Neymar’s influence continues to resonate within the squad. Speaking at a pre-match press conference ahead of the Haiti encounter, veteran defender Danilo highlighted the forward’s immense impact on opponents, stressing that Neymar’s presence alone changes how rival teams set up defensively.

“When you have a player like Neymar, opponents become more tense and need extra help to mark him,” Danilo explained. “With two players focused on him, it opens up space for others in our team. Just having him on the pitch can disrupt the opposition. Of course, we have to deal with the situation as it is. We hope he recovers well and can help us soon. His quality has already been proven many times.”
