Among Miguel Almirón’s most treasured belongings is a ring that celebrates his 2018 MLS Cup victory with Atlanta United.

“I’ve kept it close, hoping it might bring us luck to win another,” Almirón shared with pride, showing off the diamond-studded keepsake during his appearance on Breakaway presented by AT&T.

Almirón, who returned to Atlanta ahead of the 2025 MLS season following a six-year spell in the English Premier League with Newcastle United, is determined to help the Five Stripes regain their former dominance.

His optimism stems in large part from his reunion with head coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who led Atlanta to their MLS Cup triumph and has now returned to the helm.

“Thanks to him, I truly brought out the best version of myself. Moving to Europe was part of that journey. I’ve learned so much from him,” Almirón said.

“It’s a privilege to learn under a coach like Tata, whose long career and experience give us so much knowledge.”

Martino’s illustrious managerial career includes a remarkable tenure as head coach of the Paraguay national team, guiding them to their best-ever quarterfinal finish at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.

After a 16-year absence from the global stage, Paraguay — known as La Albirroja — have qualified for the 2026 World Cup, with Almirón emerging as one of the key figures behind their hard-fought return.

They are placed in Group D alongside the United States, Australia, and Türkiye.

“I’ve been part of this group for nine years,” Almirón reflected. “We’ve faced so many challenges, so many obstacles.”

“And now, by God’s grace, we’re able to enjoy this incredible moment.”
