Manchester United have finalised a deal for Ederson, but manager Michael Carrick remains keen on adding up to three midfielders as he aims to rebuild the team’s core.

The Brazilian midfielder has joined on the recommendation of Casemiro, though the Atalanta star is more of a dynamic box-to-box presence rather than a traditional defensive midfielder.

Next on United’s list is Mateus Fernandes, a Portuguese deep-lying playmaker, which explains why INEOS are continuing their search for additional midfield options.

After being priced out of potential moves for Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, the Red Devils have now broadened their scouting network beyond the Premier League in pursuit of a third signing.

Ayyoub Bouaddi has come into consideration following his standout performances at the World Cup, and the club are also monitoring a younger prospect.

According to TEAMtalk, Anderlecht’s teenage sensation Nathan De Cat has caught United’s attention with his impressive ball-winning skills and exceptional passing range. His strong physique combined with a graceful playing style has drawn comparisons to former Barcelona legend Sergio Busquets.

At just 17 years old, De Cat has already earned his first senior cap for Belgium, attracting widespread interest from across Europe.

German heavyweights Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are firmly involved in the chase, alongside Tottenham Hotspur. A potential move will likely depend on which club can offer him the most promising pathway to first-team football and long-term success.

Interestingly, De Cat’s current contract with Anderlecht runs until 2027, but he has shown little interest in extending his stay with the Belgian club.

With multiple top clubs vying for his signature, Anderlecht are reportedly hoping to secure close to £35 million from his sale.

“Tottenham are very much in contention to sign gifted Belgian midfielder Nathan De Cat,” TEAMtalk reports, “with Manchester United among several Premier League clubs monitoring his situation.

“With his contract entering its final year and no progress on a new deal despite Anderlecht’s efforts, the club faces a tough decision: cash in now or risk losing their academy jewel for free in 2027. Sources believe the Brussels side would entertain offers around €40 million (£34.7m / $45.8m) – a potential club-record fee reflecting his exceptional potential.

“Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are locked in a high-profile contest for his services, attracted by his physicality and tactical awareness. Both clubs have already made approaches, and given their reputation for nurturing young players, a switch to Germany looks very plausible.

“In the Premier League, competition for De Cat is equally fierce. Tottenham have scouted him extensively and initiated contact with Anderlecht to discuss possible terms, viewing him as a long-term deep-lying playmaker. Manchester United have made enquiries, while Manchester City and Chelsea have also conducted background checks.”

Anderlecht may also request a loan-back arrangement as part of any deal, a move that could potentially reduce the overall transfer fee.

Whether United decide to take the plunge and go all out for Nathan De Cat remains uncertain. His addition would undoubtedly be a strategic investment for the future, though it remains to be seen if that aligns with Carrick’s immediate priorities.
