Canadian midfielder Ismael Kone sustained a serious leg fracture during his team’s emphatic 6-0 win over Qatar in Vancouver on 19 June 2026.
The injury occurred in the 50th minute when Kone was challenged by Qatar’s Assim Madibo, who was penalised for a foul. The collision left Kone in visible distress, and nearby players immediately signalled for medical assistance after seeing the extent of the injury to his left leg.
Medical staff quickly attended to the 24-year-old, placing him on a stretcher and administering oxygen. As he was carried off the pitch, Kone managed to give a thumbs-up gesture, prompting applause from the crowd inside the stadium.
Madibo appeared distraught following the incident. Initially shown a yellow card by referee Cristian Marcelo Garay Reyes, the Qatari midfielder was later sent off after a VAR review deemed the tackle worthy of a red card.
Moments later, Canada’s midfielder Nathan Saliba paid tribute to his injured teammate by lifting Kone’s shirt aloft after scoring his side’s fourth goal of the match.
The fixture ended on a tense note, with both benches involved in a touchline scuffle reportedly triggered by an awkward handshake between the respective managers, Jesse Marsch of Canada and Julen Lopetegui of Qatar.
Speaking after the match, Canada’s head coach Marsch said, “Ismael is such a great kid; he’s not perfect, but that’s exactly why we love him. He can do things no one else can. He represents so much of what this team stands for. He was our standout player against Bosnia, and losing him is a massive blow. Our hearts are with him, but that boy has an incredible future.”
Kone, who currently plays for Serie A club Sassuolo, has been the subject of recent transfer speculation, with several top European sides reportedly monitoring his progress. This World Cup marked his debut appearance in the tournament.
Canadian centre-back Moise Bombito added, “Ismael’s injury is a huge setback for us, no doubt. He’s an amazing person, both on and off the pitch. We’re going to miss him dearly, but now we just want to make him proud.”
