Canada are preparing to take on Qatar this evening in their second group stage match of the World Cup 2026.
The co-hosts enter the contest as strong favourites and will be looking to secure three crucial points to strengthen their chances of advancing from the group stage.
The match will be officiated by Chilean referee Christian Garay, an experienced official known both for his extensive background and for attracting occasional controversy.
Garay’s appointment marks a milestone, as he becomes the first Chilean referee to take charge of a World Cup fixture since Enrique Osses officiated in Brazil in 2014.
Over the years, Garay has built a solid reputation through his work in high-profile tournaments such as the Copa America, Copa Libertadores, and various World Cup qualifiers.
Canada’s encounter with Qatar will be played in Vancouver, offering the home side a familiar environment as they seek to build momentum in the competition.
However, Garay’s career has not been free from criticism. In 2025, Argentine international referee Javier Castrilli called for his removal from Chile’s Liga de Primera matches after Everton Vina del Mar’s manager accused him of bias in officiating decisions.
Earlier in the year, Garay also faced scrutiny for overturning a penalty decision following a VAR review during a Saudi Pro League game between Al Fateh and Al Hilal.
Despite past controversies, Garay has been trusted with a World Cup appointment, and tonight’s fixture will mark his debut in the tournament.
Assisting him for Canada’s game against Qatar will be fellow Chileans José Retamal and Miguel Rocha on the touchlines.
The Fourth Official role will be handled by Kevin Ortega of Peru, while Juan Lara will serve as the Video Assistant Referee (VAR).
Additionally, Peruvian official Michael Orue has been named reserve assistant referee, ready to step in if required.
Heading into this match, there have already been four red cards shown in the tournament — three of them during the opening game between Mexico and South Africa. The most recent dismissal involved Bosnia and Herzegovina defender Tarik Muharemović, who was sent off against Switzerland.
Canada manager Jesse Marsch will be hoping his team can continue their strong start and push towards qualification for the knockout rounds, while Qatar head coach Julen Lopetegui is eager for his side to pull off a surprise result against the tournament co-hosts.
