Understanding Juneteenth

On Friday, June 19, many Americans will observe Juneteenth, a federal holiday that signifies the conclusion of slavery in the United States. While numerous retail outlets will remain operational, significant financial institutions and government services will halt their activities for the day. The US stock market, including both the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, will be closed in observance of this holiday. Major banking institutions such as Bank of America, Chase, and Wells Fargo will also not be open.

Juneteenth, often referred to as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, marks the historic date of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to declare the end of slavery in the nation.

What Remains Open

Most large retailers and grocery stores will operate as usual, although hours may differ by location. Here are some of the businesses that will be open:

  • Walmart

  • Target

  • Costco

  • Kroger

  • Trader Joe’s

  • Whole Foods

  • CVS

  • McDonald’s

  • Starbucks

  • Dunkin’

  • Taco Bell

  • FedEx (both deliveries and retail operations)

  • UPS (both deliveries and retail operations)

What Will Be Closed

In addition to banks and the stock market, all US Postal Service locations will be closed, and regular mail delivery will not occur on this day. The USPS is anticipated to resume its normal operations on Saturday, June 20. While Juneteenth is a federal holiday impacting financial markets, banks, and government services, the majority of retail and food establishments will continue to operate, resulting in a mixed-closure scenario across the nation.
