Seattle. Co-host America registered its second consecutive win by defeating Australia 2-0 in the Group D match of FIFA World Cup 2026 on Friday and secured its place in the knockout stage (last-32) with one match remaining.
America played aggressively from the beginning of the match and took the lead in the 11th minute. American player Folarin Balogun made a brilliant run and sent the ball between the Australian defense line, in an attempt to stop it, Australian defender Cameron Burgess accidentally sent the ball into his own goal.
After conceding the first goal, Australia kept trying to make a comeback, but the American team maintained the pressure. The United States doubled its lead just before the end of the first half.
Alex Freeman sent the ball into the net with a header from close range. The goal was initially ruled offside, but after a review by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), the goal was recognized. After this, an atmosphere of celebration was created among the American supporters present in the stadium.
With this victory, America has six points from two matches and the team is completely out of danger of being out of the group and reached the last-32.
Now America will play its final group match against Turkey at the Los Angeles Stadium, while Australia, who are on three points, will have to win against Paraguay to maintain hopes of knockout.
