Experienced World Cup referee Felix Zwayer suffered a bout of cramp towards the closing stages of the USA’s 2-0 victory over Australia in Seattle.
The 45-year-old German official required assistance from both Folarin Balogun of the USA and Australia’s Aiden O'Neill, who helped stretch out Zwayer’s left leg after he collapsed onto the turf.
Just prior to the incident, Zwayer had shown several yellow cards during the final moments of what proved to be a comfortable win for the Americans at Lumen Field.
With only a few minutes of stoppage time remaining, the referee was also handed an energy gel on the pitch by fourth official Katia Garcia to help him recover.
Zwayer eventually regained his footing and was able to complete the match, as the USA wrapped up a 2-0 victory over Australia to advance to the knockout rounds.
The Group D encounter kicked off at noon local time in Seattle, where temperatures reached around 26 degrees Celsius with approximately 45 per cent humidity by the end of the game.
This World Cup, featuring 48 teams, has introduced mandatory hydration breaks midway through each half, a move that has generated debate among players and fans alike. These pauses are designed to allow players to replenish fluids and manage the demanding conditions.
It is quite common to see players experience cramp in hot conditions towards the end of high-intensity fixtures. Referees, who cover significant distances to stay close to the action, are also susceptible to the same fatigue and muscle strain.
Zwayer is regarded as one of Europe’s leading referees. His credentials include officiating the Euro 2024 semi-final between England and the Netherlands, as well as the 2025 Europa League final contested by Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur.
